Frixion pens - One Blogger's Opinion
 

Some of you may have heard of Frixion Pens to use for marking quilts. Here is a link to a blog where the pens were tested. It has good information showing her results.

I have used them and different colors - black, blue and red - I have never had any problems with them - just barely touch the iron to them and the line completely disappears - and I have never had a line re-appear - I love them.

I love them and they do disappear without any problems. I don't use them on paper unless doodling. I'm not worried about them coming back in the cold weather. I live in VA and if it gets that cold here I think the last thing that I'll be worrying about are some small marks on a quilt here and there.

I had seen another blog (don't remember where) and she did tests too. She found that it came out with warm water UNLESS your fabric was starched before you put your ink down. I like to use these pens because the do mark so well, but I do so sparingly

I really love to use the Frixion pen. So far I have not had any problem with the ink reoccuring.

I like my Frixion Pens. Who freezes fabrics anyway? I surely don't.

I use them and what I've found is that they remove the fabric color. It happened to me when I used one on dark fabric.

Wonderful tute on the pens! I use them, and haven't had a problem, yet! But, now that I know I will be more careful. Thank you for the wonderful information.

I just used the red pin on white satin. A touch with a warm iron took it right off. Love them

Thanks for the link. I use the Frixion pens. I did notice the ghost marks on a light blue fabric. I made that project about 3 months ago. After reading this article, I just checked the project and the ghost lines seem to have disappeared. My guess is that they fade with time. At least that has been my experience so far.

I've used them on scraps to try them out. They worked successfully and I didn't have any problems. I will continue to use and hope I don't run into those problems. Thanks for the warning though.

I just bought one after one of my quilting friends shared them with me while working on half square triangles. I try not to use any marking pens in areas that don't remain in the seam allowances - I just don't like taking any chances. I use chalk more often than not.

Ah... but if you live in Minnesota and have gone out on a cold blustery day, like -20, they could conceiveably come back. I love walking, even at that temp. As long as there is no wind, even a cold day like that is doable outdoors if you are dressed warmly. A quilt adds warmth as you stand around the firepit with hot chocolate.

I love these pens, I use them to make diagional lines on the back of fabric before sewing - once ironed, the line always comes off - as for "ghost line" I don't see it, as it is the back of the fabric, also use these to mark the 1/4" seam allowance at the end of a row when I am sewing on binding, again, the mark disappears into the seam.

I would be sure if you give the item as a gift you let the person know. My concern is that you give the gift, the recipeint drives home...forgets to unpack the car, the quilt sits all night and the next day she brings it in. It was freezing, the pen came back and she doesn't know what to do because the quilt has ink on it.

I use a variety of marking tools. I ALWAYS test the marking instrument on a scrap of fabric from the quilt. Some tools work better on different fabrics/colors than others. The only problem I have had with the Frixion pens is that on some fabrics it will leave a white line.

You don't have to freeze them. lol I would never use them because I sleep in a room without heating. I stay warm with three quilts and a small poodle, but in the middle of winter the chances are those marks would return.

I use mine only in spots that will be sewn or otherwise covered. I found on dark fabrics a bleached line will show up after washing, but not the ink.

The freezing could happen if you send a quilt to a show or as a gift to someone in a cold part of the country during the winter---think Christmas gifts. The airplane cargo hold and the ups or fedex trucks aren't heated in the cargo area.

I have heard that hitting the marks with heavy steam from the iron gets rid of the ink. I haven't tried it myself. I find that the tried and true marking with chalk or wash out pens does well enough for me and I don't want to take chances.
