FYI Fabric.com shipping
Fabric.com (part of Amazon) use to have a policy of free shipping over $35. That has changed to free shipping over $49 with a $4.99 shipping charge up to $48.99. That's for continental US.

Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks from sharing. I haven't been shopping with them lately. Didn't they started charging more for a half a yard cuts? Shippping seems to be taking a big bite out of the final total for online fabric stores.

That's odd. Fabric.com quilt fabric on Amazon has free shipping.
|
Wow, they must have just changed it. I placed an order last week and it was still $35.00 (it just arrived Saturday)
Thanks for the heads up. |

I used to be able to get some great sale prices from them, but it's probably been at least a year since I last shopped with them. I think they got so many more customers, they were able to keep prices higher.

I have spent way too much money shopping there lately. They carry a Timeless Treasures Plume Peacock fabric that is just gorgeous and the quality is good. The coordinating fabrics are also very nice. I didn't realize that they were part of Amazon.

"Thank you for contacting Fabric.com with your sales tax inquiry. We are an Amazon.com owned company and as of May 8, 2014 Amazon.com has started charging sales tax in Florida. " Actually all over the country, not just in Florida. Yeah, I'm an email junkie and keep all sorts of emails from years ago. :-( |
I knew that Fabric.com is one of the suppliers for Amazon - found it when I was looking for supplies one time. You should check to see if a fabric is cheaper at their website vs Amazon, because if you haven't noticed, Amazon Prime is not always the cheaper price for a product since it includes shipping. When I am fabric shopping I usually go to at least 4 different websites before making a decision.
The MSQC also has a flat $5.00 shipping fee for orders up to $100.00, to me the convenience far outweighs the shipping charge. Quite a few years ago sales tax on items bought out of state had to include a sales tax if they were being shipped to a location into a state that has a sales tax. Can't tell you when it happened just remembered it did. Oregon doesn't have a state sales tax, but if you live in CA, buy a car in OR, you get to pay the CA sales tax when you register the car in CA. I am amazed when I buy my dies from Accuquilt I don't pay CA sales tax - so I am not complaining though. |
Real small letters at the top. |
Thanks for the info on the free shipping, thought it was only for Amazon Prime since I use a Prime Membership, so went to check it out and couldn't resist buying more fabric. Wonder how long the free shipping will last.
|
I also checked both sites, same fabric. Amazon said no shipping and it didn't specify Prime, which I don't have. Since fabric.com just added the shipping change I'll bet Amazon is right behind.... maybe waiting for a certain date to make the change. You can bet they will both be the same soon since Amazon says all fabric is sent from fabric.com. I was surprised the price for the fabric I chose as a demo was the same on both sites. So it definitely benefits us to check more than one site. The problem I have is sometimes I can only find what I like at one site and no other site is selling it. :-(
|
I hope it won't change. It hasn't for other fabric shops that sell on Amazon. Amazon reaches millions, the shop mostly thousands.

Oh well. Lucky I just purchased some fabric from fabric.com (108 inches white print on white) for a little over $6 a yard. Got the free ship on that one. |
since Amazon jumped its shipping to free over $49 Amazon Prime saves me more then the cost of having it. Prime is much more then free 2 day shipping. I'd have it if shipping wasn't part of it. |
i love Amazon Prime

I get ready to place an order with various fabric companies but when I get to the shipping fees, I delete my order. What may be a good deal on fabric is lost to shipping fees.

Looks like Amazon is following suit. Went on Amazon today and found that shipping is free over a $49 order.

The last time I placed an order there was in May when they had the big sale on Kona cotton-a bunch jumped in my cart. Although I browse the site when sent their emails, I didn't notice this shipping change until you posted. So THANK YOU! I had two backings for WIP/UFOs in the cart from Tuesday and with today's find of " Kaffe Fassett Collective Spots Kaleidoscope 2.5" Design Roll" I met the free shipping! This new minimum will certainly keep me on the straight and narrow, maybe.

Living in Alaska, shipping is always a big issue. I've gotten to the point I won't order from a company that won't ship through the Post Office. UPS and FedEx will only ship at the higher air rate and lately we've noticed that they end up sending it to the PO anyway. My biggest laugh came a few years back when I called to order something and the girl on the phone said they don't ship to international addresses! LOL

The shipping of Fabric.com orders thru Amazon is only free for regular and sale priced items. Clearance fabrics have $2.00/yard shipping charges.
I ordered some fabric from Fabric.com recently. The cuts were wierd. I had one that was cut on the round almost, it was so arched. The yard measured 37 inch at the middle of the arch. The yard at the selvage and fold were under 36 inches. Another piece I just bought looked like it had been chewed off instead of cut, and no promised 37 inches. I complained about the arched fabric because it was clearly short, since that arch isn't usable for rotary cutting, but haven't gotten a response yet. I liked them because they offer free returns, so I figured that purchases were low risk. I don't want to be pegged by Amazon as a return abuser (Amazon can ban you for too many returns) by having to return things too often at Fabric.com because they do a lousy job of cutting. I will be trying other shops from now on. MSQ and Fabric Shack both offer free shipping at $100. Fabric Shack's flat rate is only $3 up to $100. Fabric Depot offers free shipping at $65. None charge sales tax outside of their state. Yes, the reason Fabric.com charges sales tax is because Amazon is their parent. Amazon has a presence in just about every state, so has to charge tax. |
$2.00/yard still beats what I would have to pay in gas for the 45 minute drive I have to any stores other than a lousy quilting store (manager/owner is a bitch) and Walmart.
I have also had bad cuts from Fabric.com but fortunately not often. The last one was a panel that was narrow in the middle so I had to cut off the top and bottom which I hated to do. I also sent an email and it has not been answered. They only seem to answer emails when they are in the right, or think they are. :-( MSQ at $5 really isn't that bad since they can cram a lot into that box. I don't see where I will be doing free shipping anymore since I like to buy a little at a time. $35 was perfect for me. I've had good luck with Connecting Threads with tolerable shipping charges. I'll have to check out Fabric Shack. |
I remember why I don't shop Fabric Shack..... I can't stand their layout and there is no zoom or hover over for their pictures. You have to click on each one. :-(
|
Fabric Shack: They also don't have a zoom on their cart, so you have to search the fabrics that are in your cart to remember what they were (HA!).
I still like them. They have a nice assortment of regular and sale fabrics. And GREAT customer service. |
I have purchased fabric.com at the Amazon website and I know that I had to pay shipping.. I will check into that again. Maybe something changed there as well...
I am afraid this will affect how much I buy at fabric.com at least I can still get 3% back with Ebates :) |
$4.99 isn't much of a shipping charge... you'd pay that much at least in gas to drive to a store.
