I may have a quicker way....I make a lot of circles and leaves. I use light weight fusible interfacing. Mark your interfacing with your shape or mark the wrong side of your fabric, either will work. Then place your fabric piece right side to the fusible side of interfacing, sew on the marked line, trim to 1/4 inch or less seam, cut a slit in the interfacing, turn your circle/shape, smooth out applique with favorite tool...I use a small metal spoon...run around the edge on the inside, press with your fingers, then trim the interfacing leaving a 1/4 inch of fusible on the edge, then press in place where you want your applique placed, then sew. Another way to do circles is to use the tack method or circle attachment on your machine with the fabric and fusible interfacing as above.....this is really fast for circles. Remember DO NOT USE YOUR IRON TO SMOOTH OUT YOUR APPLIQUE ONLY WHEN YOU PLACE IT ON YOUR QUILT TOP. I like the pressing in place since I don't have to use those pesky applique pins.
