This was totally fascinating and informative! All I could think of was "sweat shop" and how much these guys were probably not being paid! How could we afford batik if they were being paid a living wage?

I will never look at Batiks the same way again. I have always appreciated their beauty, now I appreciate the people behind them.

Ummm I think those workers should be paid much more than they get. Obviously worker safety appears not to exist. Note the workers immersing their bare hands into the varieous dyes and chemicals day after day and primative conditions. I've never seen the entire process before and this really brought home why nearly everything is outsourced, can you imagine what the price tag on batiks would be in the US if made in US? Batiks have been made this way for many many years.
