Very cool! Boy, getting their trimmings would make great scrap quilts.

osewme 03-07-2017 10:45 AM

Wow, that was awesome to watch. Slices through 80 pieces of fabric like butter.

LenaBeena 03-07-2017 11:19 AM

Why does the cutter remove the top piece when stacking, what do they do with end scraps, where was this filmed, how do we get a tour, etc. ?

I was wondering the same things. Fascinating .

This is RJR fab...where is it located....do they sell those cutoff to public...lets find out !!

Evie 03-07-2017 05:11 PM

They're located right here in southern California! I could drive there if there was a reason to -- like buying up those scraps if available to the public. Gotta find out!

Please post if you find location and information about scraps.

QuiltnLady1 03-07-2017 06:14 PM

Cool... Thanks for the link. Would love the scraps -- bet they are real careful to make sure they have at least 40" of printed fabric instead of 2" selvages (I was just trying to cut 10" blocks and but only had 38" of print ....

Funny, this post came on the same day that I saw the video on The Quilt Show too. Isn't it amazing how automated things are.

janjanq 03-08-2017 04:40 AM

I wonder how they get those 80 layers of fabric stacked so even and smooth before cutting!

Onebyone 03-08-2017 04:56 AM

Now that is what I call a die cut machine. I have seen layers of fabric laid out on a vacuum table and they are held in place by suction to be cut into pattern shapes. The layers do not move.

toverly 03-08-2017 05:32 AM

That's a pretty neat video. I'm guessing the machine leaves a residue on the top piece of fabric. But of course, that's just a guess.

Roberta 03-08-2017 07:07 AM

Amazing and now I know what I'll tell my family I want for Christmas, that machine, in my dreams maybe !

*** I hope they do not discard the scraps. Would be great project scraps.

But, I sure wish they wouldn't pink those edges; I like a straight cut, but probably due to fraying.

coopah 03-08-2017 09:26 AM

That is way cool. My husband just told me that at his previous job (1995-2000), they used a similar machine to cut fabric for blood pressure cuffs. Of course, I just found out when telling him about this machine. LOL!

ppquilter 03-08-2017 10:33 AM

Very cool to watch!

dogsgod 03-08-2017 12:56 PM

We all want that "waste" material!

Battle Axe 03-09-2017 04:21 AM

I'm having a great deal of trouble with my precuts. My layer cakes are not 10 inches. I've got 3 projects just sitting there, two jelly rolls that are not 2 1/2 and this paint brush layer cake. What do I do with this?

Maureen 03-09-2017 03:03 PM

I worked at a large manufacturing co making stationery. The paper is cut exactly the same way by a very similar machine. If you look close, you can see the bright green light. That is a sensor to make sure everything is lined up perfectly. In the case of the paper, it was cut and stacked in huge sheets right off the presses, and then cut down to size like this fabric. I'll bet the fabric is done that way as well.

sewbizgirl 03-09-2017 04:45 PM

Those "scrap bags" that Moda sells are the end cuts from making layer cakes, as you see here in this video too.

I think the pinked blade would go through the many layers of fabric more smoothly and with less distortion than a straight blade... plus they don't have to worry about all the excess threads coming off the edges if they pink them. It makes sense to do it.

Maureen 03-09-2017 06:11 PM

Wherever you bought it from will replace. It happened to me once.

If you contact the company, they are usually good to make it right for you. You have to inquire about it.

This has happened to me too many times. I prefer to cut my own. I use the June Tailor Shape cut and a sharp 60 mm blade.

Wow that was an interesting way of cutting the layer cakes.

Deb Strain, a designer for Moda, gets a lot of the cut offs sent to her. She comes to our sewing guild every year and brings a big box of them. She and the quilt shop owner package them in bags and sells them to us at a small price. We buy them and bring what we've made from them back the next time she comes. It is amazing what people make from them. I've made quilts, wall hangings, folded star wreaths, and several things from them.
