How to Sew the Ladder Stitch

I was reading old messages about the Clover Wonder Clips and there were references to the "ladder stitch". Several posters asked what it was but I didn't see any replies.

I had seen this demonstrated at this site and used it for my bindings. It was wonderful !! and invisible !! I thought I'd share the link.

Nice tutorial. I use the ladder stitch on binding, and all of my applique. It is quite invisable. And I don't have to worry so much about matching thread color for applique.

Ladder stitch

Thank you so much for posting this - I needed a refresher on this method... funny how I forget details when I have not used that method for a while... I have quilt top finished and waiting to be quilted and will bind your way. thank you again.

Thanks for that info. I'll be using that for my next binding.

Thanks for sharing ! Always can use a refresher !

I LOVE using the ladder stitch!! When I saw it originally posted, I immediately tried it. I'll NEVER go back to the other way of sewing bindings on. I even shared this method with the members of my quilting group (some of them are truly masters) and they loved it too.

Thanks so much for the tutorial....was just about to bind a toddler quilt today....will try this stitch!

Thanks. Didn't know about this stitch but am sure going to try it for bindings and applique.

How funny, that's the way I do it, I just did not have a name for it!!

solstice3 03-09-2012 12:37 PM

Now I know it has a name! When I have shown friend how to do it, I just told them .."it's the way my grandma always told me was the right way to do things." You ddn't argue with grandma's wisdom.

Thx for sharing! I machine bind, but was wondering what stitch to use to join a knitted towel to cloth. I think this will work great!

Great tutorial. I have been using the ladder stitch on binding and didn't know it. LOL

Gee, I thought everyone used this stitch on bindings. My Mom taught me to use this on hems. I always use it for bindings. Love it.

My local quilting partner uses this method, and her applique stitches as well as her binding stitiches are INVISIBLE!!! She's shown me this before, but this is a great tut...thanks!

Jakers1 03-10-2012 07:13 AM

I knit and this stitch was one that I was to use for some leg warmers I made. Now I get what the instructions were trying to tell me - thanks. And since I am almost ready to bind my first quilt, the tutorial will come in handy.

I use the blind stitch for binding.

Here is a pdf document I made for our 4-H quilting club about binding:

kathdavis 03-10-2012 08:16 AM

I used the ladder stitch all the time when I bind. I didn't know what it was call, but it is invisible. I've even doubled my thread to enforce this and it is still invisible. I love stitching the binding because it is the grand finale of the quilt.

Great tutorial - nice refresher for me - used to do it this way and changed for some reason - think I will go back and try this way again. I am new to applique and have never done this stitch with applique, but will certainly try. Right now I am appliqueing 23 1" circles (bouquet of balloons) to twelve blocks -- I am learning every day ...

katykwilt 03-10-2012 10:17 AM

Thanks for sharing the tute. I'm going to suggest using this method when our group does the binding on a charity quilt. I can tell who did what section on the quilt if we use the usual blind stitch since each of us uses different needles, stitch lengths, etc. This way no one would be able to see any stitches.

Interesting......I was taught that stitch when putting hems in garments...lay the fabric over your forefinger as you create the stitch gives it bit of give & the finished look is an invisible stitch.

Jannie 03-10-2012 09:27 PM

I remember seeing this once before & have been looking for a tut on. Thanks.
