The best tip I've seen so far is to use a lined index card to test your 1/4" for accuracy. They are so convenient to use because they can be sewn on, the lines are visible and the lines are absolutely accurate 1/4" inch apart. You have lots of chances to get the needle position right, don't have to hunt around for fabric that contrasts with whatever thread you have in your machine, and they're cheap and plentiful.

I always use my 1/4" foot AND move my needle position. I remember my needle position for an accurate "finished" 1/4" seam (finished = after ironing).

Note though that I DO have to adjust my needle position if I am sewing two batiks together, or sewing two heavier fabrics together (ie some of the Asian prints). The very thin, or very thick fabric will make a difference.

I like the method....but I really prefer my single hole stitch plate when piecing. My 1/4 " foot with the quide also has a single hole so no moving the needle. I know of course I can still do it with another 1/4" foot w/o the guide and wider opening, but why can we just have both?? Can't they just make a scant foot that would probably be a perfect 1/4"????
We just want it all, don't we lol!!!!
