Identifying an old Quilt
 

Can someone help me figure out- I can faintly see on the back a print that looks like Dunlop. I’m not sure if this name is correct. I can only see what looks like 3 of the letters, so I filled in rest to what I think it might say. It was given to me by family who got it from some dear friends. I was told that the back of quilt was dyed with walnut hulls. I’m not sure about any of that. I was hoping someone on this forum could help me find out if this name sounds familiar. Did people use to use this type of fabric for quilting. I’m trying to figure out a date when it may have been made. Thanks

My grandmother told me that people the generation prior to her used walnut hulls to dye fabric. She was born in 1905. She said that it was a common pioneer thing. If my memory serves me correctly, she also had a quilt back dyed in this fashion. It seemed to be from the 1850-1890 era. I do suppose, though, that people could have done it later if they knew how to.

Actually, I just looked up and the Dunlop flour sacks look like they were printed during the depression. I just found a picture of one that had blue flowers on it. Maybe it is a depression quilt! How resourceful people were!

Thank y’all so much for the information. I’m still researching myself. I watched a YouTube video today where this lady showed a quilt pattern that looked similar to mine, but was a little different. She called it a circle quilt and said the circle quilt may be known as drunkards path too. So I’m still researching. I may be wrong, but I’m thinking it was made in late 1800s. I absolutely love it!! It’s the softest and coziest quilt. My grandson loves to use it when he sleeps over. I guess I need to put that one up for safe keeping. I guess I know who that quilt will be passed on to one day.
