Jenny's new tutorial

Jenny Doan from the Missouri Start Quilt Company has new tutorial out, using a layer cake, she makes a Disappearing Hourglass Quilt . it's really cute!!

KalamaQuilts 06-27-2014 07:50 AM

That's cool, I used some of my oh so precious on-line minutes to watch some of it.
For those familiar with their company, would the instructions be somewhere on their site, or is it something they sell?

Really cute! I think it will be perfect for misc. fat quarters with one main background colour to tie them together. I can cut a couple of 10 inch squares from each. As with all of Jenny's recut tutorials, starch fabric well and handle gently as the bias edges stretch.

Usually you can print out directions from her site. or under video. Also many of her quilts are in her "block" magazine

Sew carefully with 1/4 inch seams and watch the stretch. The bad new is......the bias edges stretch.....the good news is......the stretch helps to make the pieces line up well. The other tricky part is dividing it into 3 equal sections for cutting. My block ended up being a smidge over inner measurement but I used 2 1/8 with a smidge over the 1/8 mark on my ruler to do the last 9 patch cuts.
It came out quite nice and I will make a few more until the pale yellow background from my stash runs out. Hopefully it will be an even number of blocks. On the final 2 seams when sewing the 9 patch together, I pressed them open as there were a lot of seam allowances. Here's what it looks like.

Here's the back and the total size is 1/8 under 12 inches.

Great looking block!

very cute!

I saw this tute yesterday and it's really pretty.

ladydukes 06-28-2014 05:12 AM

I can't find the pdf file written instructions for the DPHG pattern. Does anyone have them who could share? Thanks!

nwm50 06-28-2014 05:25 AM

I was wondering the same thing ladydukes....

Leslie333 06-28-2014 05:41 AM

It's a cute block, one I plan to put on my "want to do" list.

janiesews 06-28-2014 06:32 AM

Love it!! Will have to make this one.

Here's block 2, as you can see I am digging through my old scrap pile for 10 inch squares. I think this dark blue with little roses is from the 1980's?

judy363905 06-28-2014 07:41 AM

Tartan, thank you for all your work and reporting your tips for assembling this block. Just a question? Maybe beginning with 11" squares would give the extra wiggle room to have a 12-1/2 unfinished block? If I give it a try I will report in :)

Will go look at tute....

Tartan- great block!!

Tartan 06-28-2014 08:47 AM

The tricky part is the final cut for the equal 9 patch assembly. The 12 and 3/4 hourglass block divides evenly into 9-4 1/4 squares to reassemble. I would try a sample of 10 1/2 to 11 to see what works for division. Please post if you work it out for those who want a 12 and 1/2 inch block.

Thank you for posting. I just watched the video.

As Jenny mentioned in the video, you also could get a cute block if you don't rotate the center 4patch. I thought I would show that before I rotate it so it goes with my 2 other blocks.

My experiment was a little iffy. 11" is too big. Hourglass measured 14-1/4 making the sections 4-3/4 but it finished out At 13+ a smig. I also found that I really do not like dealing with bias edges even tho I starched the squares before starting. I was going to make a small 4th of July wall hanging. I would just say if you plan to make this block into a complete quilt that you make a sample block before starting. Here is the block idea I had...

Ps I did square up at 12-1/2 leaving small triangles on the four corners

Tartan 06-28-2014 10:15 AM

Love your block! It will make a really cute wall/door hanging or table topper with borders.

judy363905 06-28-2014 10:31 AM

Thanks Tartan, I had planned to make four blocks. Not sure if it will be completed. Looking forward to seeing your blocks as you continue

Tartan: Loved your blocks. Thanks for showing the both blocks. One with the center rotated and what it looks like if you do not rotate the center. They are so pretty either way. I am presently working on Jenny's Disappearing Pinwheel Quilt so it was so neat to see that same block, layed out as the Hour Glass. Guess I will have to try that one next. Jenny is so clever.

judy363905 06-28-2014 04:30 PM

After rethinking this block, I have come up with this, if you want 12-1/2 in unfinished block.. Use 11 in or 10-1/2 squares and when the hour glass is made ..... Square block up to 13-1/2 in square using the center to be sure it is square... Then you can cut 4-1/2 units for the 9 patch. That would make a 12-1/2 unfinished block in the end. I took a break and worked on a 4th of July banner this afternoon. Will post photo on different link.

Isn't the hourglass the same as a quarter square triangle? I will try using the method I learned from Jan on here for quarter square. No bias edges to deal with.

quiltingshorttimer 06-28-2014 07:08 PM

Visited MSQC days before the tute filmed--Jenny was so nice and welcoming and showed us this block (and quilt). She did say the bias edge was a tricky issue and once you got the hour class you may want to square up before making1/3 cuts.

papagrandma12 06-29-2014 03:55 AM

Thanks for all the information about this block. You guys are great.

Here are 6 blocks layed out and I have pieces cut for 3 more which will make it about 34 and 1/2 inches square. I think I might make it 3 blocks wide and 4 blocks long for a rectangle so 3 more sets to cut. The bias edges are tricky and you also have to careful cutting so we'll see how big it gets.:)

gramquilter2 06-29-2014 03:35 PM

Love your blocks, Tartan.

Very pretty Tartan.....good job. Love the blue colors.

Opps, it looks like I have a date with my thread snips. As I was pressing my block I noticed something didn't look right.

I learned from Anita Grossman Solomon's class to use a strip of lightweight fusible interfacing in a X shape before cutting the HST. This works best for me. I buy the interfacing by the roll of 1 1/2" wide strips. With this block I iron most of the seams open too.

Thanks for the great link.

Check out potholders made from this pattern. Love the potholders pictured in the show and tell on Missouri quilt forum. Believe she started with 9 inch and finished at 10 inches .
