Just what is FMQ?
Many are calling ANY quilting done on a Domestic machine FMQ..which is Free Motion Quilting. Which be definition means just that..your design is FREE...you do not use stencils or designs marked on the quilt, or designs on paper, you just use needle, thread and MIND to design/play as you go along.
Once you use a design or mark your quilt you are doing "hand-guided" quilting. FMQ can also be done on a LA machine, as can hand-guided! While I did find Leah Day's info interesting, I also found this site interesting. http://www.generations-quilt-pattern...-quilting.html I really liked her TIP on starching your backing so that is glides more freely! And her foot! I need to find a metal open toe foot like that! What is your fave site/tip for FMQing? |
This is what I thought also, but I have found that people have many definitions for fmq. I just make sure when I say my quilting is free motion that people understand I don't use any kind of stencils or marking on my quilts.

FUN, FUN, FUN! :p For me, hand-guided quilting is a little more "work" but still enjoyable also, so I FMQ most of the time using the layout of the quilt to guide my designs. The site you referred to has lots of great tips and info. Thanks for posting another great resource. |
I disagree. I think "Free Motion" refers more to the fact that the machine is not controlling the movement of the fabric, the sewer is. Free Motion quilting doesn't describe how the pattern was transferred to the quilt (with or without design aids), only the fact that 100% of the motion to create it was controlled by the quilter.
I would not consider the use of one of those panto boards to be "free motion" for example, because the board is controlling the motion of the machine. |
Thanks for the link Jacquie. I will go back later and peruse it in full when I have time. I sent the link to my grandson's wife since she is a newbie to sewing and quilting. Yep, I gave her the "quilting bug" and will be sending her a sewing machine this week to insure she never recovers.

I agree with Dog House Mom. Free motion is the machine controlling the movement of the fabric. I sometimes use stencils and FMQ, which, as someone stated, is more tedious than just free motioning without a pattern.
