Learning About Different Threads

I read this with great interest - thank you for posting - because I have a stupid question.

What is wrong with using Metrosene Polyester thread when piecing 100% cotton fabrics? This article says it's ok to do, but most say you should only use 100% cotton thread with cotton fabric. I am confused....

I've turned into a fanatic about thread; here's what I've come to
For hand piecing: either Mettler cotton embroidery 60wt or Bottom Line a 60 wt poly.
Applique: Bottom Line usually, sometimes a silk thread.
Machine piecing: Aurifil in the needle, Bottom Line in the bobbin
Hand quilting, which I seldom do, I often use Bottom Line, or one of Superior Threads cottons (not Masterpiece) or veriegateds if I want the thread to show.
Machine quilting: I pretty much use what I use for machine piecing.

I don't find any problem using a good quality poly thread with cotton fabric.

This post interests me greatly especially since today I ran into a lady that sews and owns her own shop. She doesn't really quilt anymore too much and doesn't like machine quilting (which is fine no qualms there). She did however make sure that I knew that she definitely would only use polyester thread with polyester fabric and cotton thread with cotton fabric. She wanted to know where I was getting my info that it was alright to use polyester thread on cotton fabric. I said that I had a lot of sources online. She said, "oh so you believe everything you see online?" Well no not everything..I am not naive,but there is some validity to what I find in my research!! There I stated my piece. Had to get it off my chest to someone and this seems like a good place!

I too use a poly thread with 100% cotton fabrics. I have done this forever. My mother used it for garment sewing and my great aunt used it in ALL of her quilts. I just don't buy into the theory that the thread will eventually "slice" thru the cotton fabric. My theory is that the cotton fabric just gets weaker and ages as it is used and the poly thread doesn't. JMHO
