A lovely way of displaying and using a couple of treasured quilts

I have a new way of displaying a couple of my quilts Our block of flats are having a huge refurbishment done in the next year but in the meantime the double glazing is past it's best especially in the bedroom and my balcony door, so................ Using a couple of these super hangers from EBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...OC%3AGB%3A3160 I have displayed a lovely really old quilt over my existing curtains and boy does it make a huge difference. But what is really nice that this lovely quilt can be seen at it's best and not just folded up.
I have just ordered some more hangers as I am going to "display" one over my balcony door for the winter, win win situation IMO |
Lovely quilt! Unless I'm misunderstanding your post, you may want to rethink hanging those quilts, to block sunlight. Sunlight will bleach out the colors, in very little time! You'd do better, to hang a sheet or something else, less valuable.

This is a lovely hand worked quilt, not sure of it's age or where it comes from but a couple of the fabrics are so old that they are disintegrating so I appliqued a Sun Bonnet Sue on , to walk in Grandmothers Flower garden, get it the name of the pattern :) When I have time I am going to do an Overall Sam for the other worn patch, to keep Sue company. The hangers have lovely smooth plastic grips which are only on the machined edge, which I think was done at a later time as ALL of the rest is hand worked. It is lovely to see it hanging to enjoy as prior to this it was just folded up in amongst my other quilts. When Spring comes I will think of making a space on one of my walls as I think it will be happier hanging that creased up, ignored and forgotten. |
It is hanging inside of existing curtains so I don't think fading will effect the quilt back. It sure looks pretty and toasty warm!

very nice and colourful

Yes, the way I understood she is wanting to block the cold air until they redo the apartments. There should be no damage with curtains hanging behind them. She will be a lot warmer and can enjoy the beautiful quilts.
QuiltingaddickUK, that is a beautiful quilt and Sue looks so pretty walking in the Grandmother's Flower Garden. Great idea. |
Your Sunbonnet Sue is a wonderful idea!

Nice idea. We have one or two windows we hang a blanket in front of (after curtains are closed) to help keep the draft down in the coldest days of winter and they are not very pretty to look at. I may have to rethink that idea and make a window quilt that is more attractive. Hmmm, and maybe rig it to look like a roman shade that can be drawn up or down with a cord. The wheels are turning in my head now.... Thanks for posting this. :)

Love your "hide the ugly window" solution and I don't think there will be fade/damage problems seeing as the curtains will be a buffer. Your Sue "fix" is a wonderful idea....wandering about in Grandmother's Flower Garden....I remember reading an article about window quilts when I was living in Asia...It was either the Netherlands or Norway...anyway...they made quite puffy quilts and used them over big windows/doors, but hung like curtains with rings, clever and beautiful way to keep out the chill winds of winter.
Thanks for sharing your beauty! Happy quilting. |
we recently took out a window in the front room or living room we still have the curtain hanging there and now there is also a quilt rack that is the same width of the window frame so I hung that there and put a lovely quilt on it.

Oh that Sun Bonnet Sue walking through the garden is such a sweet idea. I may add that to one of mine.

I spent 100 of £/$s on curtains for my lounge but has the main window is huge I couldn't afford really good ones, I keep on thinking about making quilt drapes!? |
Neat idea, googling how to make a quilted roman shade brings up lots of sites, have fun!

I am seriously looking at making eyelet curtains for my bedroom and lounge, especially the lounge as they are so huge they would need the strength of a pole to hold them up.
I have thought for a number of years that quilts would make superb curtains as they are lined, thermal insulated pretty, and most of all home made :) |
