Lubricating Thread to Stop Breaking

I just stumbled onto this while poking on Pinterest. http://quiltdasher.blogspot.com/2013...ourneedle.html

The poster tells how the adds sticky Velcro to the side of machine, adds silicone and WHERE to place the Velcro. This latter "WHERE" is important so that you do not gum up your tension selector.

I see some of the site is not underlined here and am wondering if it will open. If not, I'll go to the site and bring the wording to you. I tried it and it opened for me. Good luck.

I use Sewer Aid when I FMQ on my domestic machine. I usually apply it right to the spool or cone. I might try this, Thanks

I use Sewer Aid too. I only need it when I am quilting with Sulky metallic thread.

Like Luana, I put the Sewer's Aid directly onto the thread. I run a line up the spool from one end to the other. I use it sparingly...and as needed, I reapply. I've used this mostly on metallic threads with good results.

Interesting idea - filed away for if I have a thread shred problem. Thanks for sharing!

The silicone lubricant also helps if you have a static problem in the thread.

For some, check your bits and pieces that came with your machine, as some machines come with a lubricant pad that you can just slides on and you soak with the silicone as needed. In between you keep it in a ziplock baggie.

I have found changing the needle to a 90/14 topstitch ( with larger eye) takes care of shredded thread without putting anything through the machine that could cause build up.

When i took a class with Sharon Schaumber, she uses mineral oil and actually brushes it on the thread spool of all her threads. I have been doing it and it seems to help! She is an AWESOME teacher with lots of great tips. You can get a BIG bottle of mineral oil in the drug store and its much less than sewers aid.

Thanks for the tip about the mineral oil I am going to try that.

Sewers Aid is liquid silicone. It's the same thing as the no frizz hair serum. You can put a few drops on your hand and run it through your hair, works great. I use the mineral oil which I learned about from a class with Sharon Schamber. In the quilting world, if Sharon talks you listen. LOL
