The Universal needles are pretty good for general sewing but, when it comes to machine quilting, a Topstitch or Quilting needle is better. These needles are a little stronger, so you can stitch through several layers of fabric without fear of breaking the needle. Plus because the eye is larger, you can use thicker thread and even two different threads at the same time to make your machine quilting even more interesting.
