Maine Quilt Shops?
Hi there! DH & I are planning a trip to Maine. All the way up the coast to Houlton on Route 1.
Any quilt shops that I must stop at? I have stopped at one in Bath years ago & loved it. It was so charming. thanks!!:) |
We visited Ogunquit ME last summer and I found Knight's Quilt shop right outside of town: 1901 US Rte 1
Cape Neddick, ME. It's a beautiful large house with wonderful fabrics and kits and sewing related gift items. They have a very special collection of toy sewing machines along the tops of all of their fabric shelves. I'd say it's a must-visit. Enjoy your trip...I love Maine! |
Thanks IQ2! Will be checking it out!

Cottonweeds in Freeport is a must to stop at. The shop is absolutely priceless and the gals that work there
are wonderful. Take the time to check the upstairs classroom out. This shop is one of my favorites in Maine. Enjoy you trip thru Maine. |
Mardens is not a quilt shop per se but a discount store that sells quilt fabric for lower cost. It's almost like Goods Store in E. Earl, PA. There are several locations but I prefer the location just North of Augusta, Maine and the one in Ellsworth, Maine. If you are in Ellsworth there is a shop, Sewing by the Sea, in Trenton, Maine on the road to Bar Harbor, Maine. It's small but has a very nice selection of fabrics.

Hi:
The Maine shops I go to are: Knights quilt shop, Cape Neddick on Rte 1. There is one in Windham Maine off the beaten path but worth the trip. In Freeport Maine there is Cottonweeds, a must stop. Kathies Quilt Shop is in Sanford Maine off the beaten path but very nice. There is one in Booth Bay Harbor and I have been there only once very nice. When you get to Maine go to Knights first and she will have a list of all the shops in Maine and where they are. You will like that stop and you can even have a nice lobster roll there. Yummy. Kathie, Nova Scotia is on my bucket list!! DH & I would have visited last year while in Maine but no passports. This year we will have passports but not enough time. I think this will be my 4th visit to the Great State of Maine. We love it & have thought of moving, but family keeps us here.
Thanks everyone, I am really going to try to get to several of these & definitely Marden's. Fabric is a great souvenir for my mom! I will plot out these quilt shops & take a list with me & then plot out our 'potential' time frame in regard to driving. DH will let me stop for some, but not all! I would spend all of our vacation money if I did!! Appreciate all of the feedback. Thank you! |
We just took a trip along the coast all the way to Lubec. It's so beautiful there. There's a quilt shop called Fabricate inBar Harbor that's nice. It's in a circular building that used to be a bank. The staff was very helpful.

At the very end of your trip is a shop on the Calaghan Rd. in Houlton and I think the name is I'd Rather Be Quilting.

Another one is Mainely Quilt Gift shop,Nobleboro- On Board Fabrics,Edgecomb-Alewives Fabrics also in Nobleboro-Quilt Divas,Rockland. There are 40 known quilt shops in the state. We just had our annual quilt show that has brochures with all the quilt shop listed in the state.Sorry you missed that! It was worth the trip.Have a great time here in Me and drive safe

I was able to get to Quilting Divas last summer but did not know about the shop in Edgecomb. We stayed on Mt. desert Island & we were so close!
Sorry that I missed the Quilt Show, I am sure it was wonderful. We always miss the Lobster Festival in Rockland too. Usually we stay inland but last year we did a coastal vacation with the family. Cannot wait to go back! |
I agree Mardens is the best price wise. You will not believe the prices :). Knights is good also. I go to the Mardens in Sanford. On route 1 when you get into Wells you will see turn for route 109 Sanford. Go on 109 about 10 miles. Worth the trip for sure. Also if you have the time, eat at the Maine Diner in Wells. Great food and wonderful service. It has been a Maine tradition for years. Enjoy your vacation.

I will be going to Maine at the end of the month. Iowa to Maine which is a 22 hr trip. My son went to collage in Maine. Came back to Iowa for a year and missed it so much he went back. Lobster at 3.99 lb. that's hamburger price!! I will be in Portland for a week so I,m interested,in those shops as well. Car is going out with his boxes but lots of room on the way back for fabric!
|
Thanks so much everyone for the shop & eatery tips! So appreciate it & oreo12 I don't feel bad now, our drive is only about 15 hours. HA!! Safe travels. My husband gets so excited about eating fresh lobster so cheap, it's funny.

Yes, On Board Fabrics in Edgecomb, Alewives in Damariscotta and Mainely Sewing (Nobleboro) are all within 30 minutes of each other and like all quilt shops, each have a personality of their own and worth visiting. I am fortunate enough to live in this area and frequent each of them and their staff is helpful. I have also enjoyed some of their classes.

Try Quilt Essentials in Auburn Maine - a quilt/yarn shop. Wonderful fabric, wonderful owners. Lots of neat ideas on display.

Here is a link to quilt shops listed on the Pine Tree Quilters Guild (The Maine Guild) web site:
http://www.mainequilts.org/quilt_shops.htm All of the fabric shops in the above replies are wonderful. Another great shop is not exactly on the coast, but a short distance off I-95 in Madison, Maine. It is called The Fabric Garden and this place is unbelievable. It is a small building but the amount of fabric they have in there rivals any of the larger shops and is fabulous. If you are into reproduction fabrics be sure to go to the Busy Thimble in Litchfield. She specializes in fabric from the 1800's and has hundreds and hundreds of bolts. Another small building but you will be amazed when you get inside. When I lived in Maine, up until a year and a half ago, these were to of my favorite place to go, other than to Marden's, for deals of course. PS: Maine has a wonderful quilt show every year the last weekend in July. 300-500 quilts, nationally known teachers and fabulous vendors from all over the country. It is in Augusta (the capital) in the air-conditioned civic center. |
