I've made 2 of these, and recently made one using a wooden TV tray from Walmart. I love how easy they are to make.

I have made one this size in the picture, and recently made me one that is only about 8 - 10 inches to press when paper piecing. It was easy with my husband's staple gun. :)

I love these portable ironing pads. That is a good way to make one. Some I have seen use very much padding under the canvas. That is not necessary. The ones you buy have a piece of foam about 1/16th inch thick. One piece of batt should work unless it is really thin.

As for the washing of the top, I have my ironing board covered with freezer paper. It works well as an ironing surface, but the biggest reason to use it is when you are doing a lot of spray starching. When the freezer paper gets grungy looking, peel it off and put on new.

Dh made one for our niece who stops over once in a while. Couple weeks ago she spent few hours with me and we went yard sailing. She found a warped (on one end) cutting mat. DH cut it as big as he could for one piece and a smaller for the other. It actually helped remove the warp. He had already made her a pressing board then just stapled the cutting mat to the back. He screwed a leather purse handle on the end so she could carry it. They fit perfectly in her tote. He changed the numbers around the edges with permanent marker (white). She also picked up a small travel iron that also fits in her tote. She has an oven mit for that. I need to get the pattern for the iron caddy.

We just made a pressing board yesterday using the cardboard inside fabric bolts.glued 3 together and then duck taped them.Then covered with batting and flannel.It is great to have set up right on the table beside my machine and it was real cheap with free cardboard from Hobby lobby and leftover batting and flannel!
