I did it with black and batiks
Trying to get a pic.
as for the placement, if you start with 4, 2 of the opposite corners the points go toward each other, the other 2 squares the corners point away from each other

Now with the black bkgrnd it is much easier to see the pattern flow.....I do agree the white makes it wishy-washy. This is agreat " modern" using grey as bkgrnd....maybe?

I love it in black and brights. I'm planning polka dots, but haven't decided on background color.
