New use!

Went to guild meeting...having missed two prior. Learned about something new, so I thought I would pass along, but you may already know about it...hardware store product called Sewer Cloth or Soil Separator Cloth.....it comes in a roll of 300 ft, about 36" wide....wondering "what for?"............very light weight interfacing......show n tell.....she used it on back of pieces she wanted to appliqué by machine, but turn under the edges...like EB........best part....cheaper than l/w interfacing at JAB......went and bought a roll.....enough for a lifetime!, but now I can tackle a precut SS that has been sitting on shelf for------ yrs!

toverly 01-21-2015 05:35 AM

Thanks Geri B, that sounds interesting. I may have to give it a look next time I'm in a hardware store.

zennia 01-21-2015 06:42 AM

Going to lok for it next time I am out

landers1 01-21-2015 08:08 AM

Very interesting, do you iron it to fabric ?

Onebyone 01-21-2015 08:34 AM

Lowes has it under soil separator cloth. 100 ft roll for $20. It didn't list the width, it looks about 30". I can't find it at any hardware store under the name of Sewer Cloth.

LOL I called ACE Hardware and the man said do you mean Sewer (as in toilet) cloth? We have that.

crafty pat 01-21-2015 12:40 PM

Thank you I will be looking for it.

ejmhome2 01-21-2015 03:42 PM

It also works great for making your own sewing patterns when you do not want to cut out the original.

Teacup 01-21-2015 04:48 PM

I guess I need a better explanation of its use. Is it something you leave in an applique project? Do you tear it off the back? Can it be ironed without melting? Is it washable?

Chester the bunny 01-21-2015 05:43 PM

I use used dryer sheets.

lynnie 01-21-2015 05:58 PM

now that i have the bar in the dryer, no more sheets.

is this fabric non toxic, is it just fabric under another use?

What kind if any are there chemicals in it. thanks

elnan 01-21-2015 06:56 PM

I think you will find it as Landscape Cloth in the gardening section of Home Depot, or any large hardware & gardening store. Seems there were two different weights of it.

I was going to mention that also. I'm a long time quilter and it is really hard for me to understand some of these abbreviations. Is everyone in so big a hurry that they can't type out word? You know this isn't chat. I notice the other day a person new to quilting and the Quilt Board ask for advice and people replied using a lot of abbreviations, I'm sure she didn't understand any on it and I couldn't help her because I didn't know what they were writing either.

Thanks for sharing !

Onebyone 01-22-2015 04:55 AM

I don't think the abbreviations are all that difficult to figure out. I had a pause with JAB but figured it was a missspell and it was suppose to be JAF due to the content of the post.

beadywoman 01-22-2015 05:49 AM

I did a search for this product after reading this thread. Over on Sew Forum, they had a thread about it. Several wrote that they had very good success with it, but several others said that use of a product not specifically made for embroidery could void the warranty on your machine. I have not researched this point, but I guess it should be considered. But if the fiber content is identical, I can't see that it would matter.

GEMRM 01-22-2015 07:13 AM

This sounds intriguing to say the least - but, once again, can't find it in Canada (at least on line) - anyone else up here have any luck finding it?
I have tried the various combinations of sewer, septic, soil separator etc. on Home Hardware, Lowes and Home Depot.
I did find several choices for Jobes landscape fabric, may look at that when I go to town next.

Geri B 01-22-2015 08:15 AM

Sorry again for the abbreviations, and the misspell( jab s/b JAF)--- there I go again! To much texting in my life!

I don't know much about the limits of this product...the roll is leaning against a wall in my sewing cave. I did touch it at the guild meeting. It feels like lite weight NON fusible interfacing, and she has used it in place of using freezer paper to do her machine appliqued pieces....she sewed right sides together on piece( circle) line, trimmed about 1/8" around, small slit into interfacing, flipped out and she said she did iron, then blind stitched down......so I guess that would answer the questions. I will cut a piece, wet it and see if it "shrinks". On the roll there is an illustration of how to use it ....shows it laying on top of a drainage pipe before the dirt is put on top to cover??? Someone in that field understands the real purpose......

Btw...this was in the plumbing section of the store...

linkd 01-22-2015 04:56 PM

Think of all the confused guys at Home Depot over the next few days (sales department - weird use division). Maybe we could just have them call Harbor Freight to get some advice on what to do with us from the guys who sell more carpet cutting blades than there is carpet in town.

coopah 01-23-2015 06:16 AM

Linkd, you're funny! :) I have some 'stuff' that is like interfacing, and probably is what you're talking about in this thread. It's grey and from Costco years ago. Bought it in the spring (planting season) to go around newly set in plants. Then I covered the fabric stuff with cedar chips. It lets in rainwater for the plants, but keeps the weeds from growing. Weeding is so not interesting to me. You could probably use it in sewing, but I've never tried it or even thought about it.
Lynnie, I bought this years ago and couldn't tell you any of the information about what it's made of, etc. Sorry. I just know it keeps me from weeding!

CAS49OR 01-23-2015 08:58 AM

Thanks for sharing, will work great for sewing patterns as well as quilting and sew-in interfacing, if it's strong enough for that. I bought a roll of medical paper, like you see on exam tables, rather cheap on Amazon, but it's only 18" wide, this is 36". Awesome!

AMEN!!!!! I just ignore those posts mostly unless I really want to look up them up. This board is to help people, not make it hard for newbies....

Yes, that is the product....I bought mine at menards(another big box store type)... Should have checked Home Depot first...mine is 300 ft.

dee1245 01-23-2015 02:49 PM

I did a Google search for this. The company site says it is made of a type of plastic. Haven't seen it in person.

coopah 01-23-2015 06:03 PM

The nonwoven stuff I have is gray, so it's different, although it might work the same as this Home Depot product. Something to look for at the hardware store.

mermaid 01-24-2015 04:13 PM

It is also used for stabilizer for embroidery machines. I bought 2 leather recliners from Sam's club and they came emcased in this type fabric. I've been using it for emb stabilizer--only do not place hot iron on. I found it okay to iron garments as long as I press the fabric side. Can you imagine how long this supply will last--2 big chairs??

lots2do 01-24-2015 04:41 PM

Qi don't mind the abbreviations. I also enjoy trying to figure out personalized license plates. :)

PaperPrincess 01-25-2015 01:06 PM

I have been using this product for at least 10 years as an embroidery stabilizer. Heavier fabric, just use more layers. I've gone thru a couple 300 ft rolls. I have also used it to draft patterns. Never thought to use it as a foundation for quilting, however, but it should work.

ellisjoy 01-25-2015 01:20 PM

Thanks for the tip! Just put it on my shopping list.

akmnj 01-30-2015 05:00 PM

I looked for this at the Lowe's and Home Depot in Wasilla. They don't carry it. I wonder if landscape fabric will work. Has anyone tried it? We can find landscape fabric up here in the spring. The only "problem" with the landscape fabric is the color (brown and tan). White sediment or sewer fabric would be nicer than tan/brown.
