I've been playing with this method for a couple days now. I love the way it works, but I just can't make it turn out to the exact size I want. My "height" stays the same no matter what size I cut the small squares. That must be because the large square doesn't change size. I need 5 geese pieces to measure 3x8 finished (3.5x8.5 unfinished). With a 4 1/4" large square, I can only get the 5 geese to equal 3.5x8 unfinished. I'm resigned to just adding a strip of the background to make it the right size, unless someone can help! :)

I love this way.I have used the one where you place 4 squares on the corners and sew dia.across each square and cut off the excess on the back. this is so cool no wate. Love it Craftybear. Thanks alot. Mary

Crafty - Thanks so much for all the helpful links you post here :)- The one you posted recently about marking your quilt using toille to mark your quilt top was also especially helpful to me. Appreciate it!!

Thank you for the Flying Geese No Waste Method!!!! I love it! I hate to waste those little triangles that are usually cut off. No more! Can't wait to use it!

I've been using this method for years. The best I've ever found!

My problem about doing it this way is I usually buy the fabric I need for the pattern and then realize I need more to do it this way or do I? Not at all good with math :-)

1 1/4" larger than your finished measurement and the 4 smaller squares need to be 7/8" larger than the finished measurement. Let's say you want to make a 2"x4" flying geese. Your squares would be 5 1/4" and then four that are 2 7/8" and you will get four flying geese that are the correct size. The resulting flying geese will be 2.5" x 4.5". Does that help? This is so cool. I bookmarked and will definitely try it.

Thanks a bunch. You realy come up with great sites. Appreciate the time you put in. Anne

Thanks so much Sharon! I always thought I had to buy extra fabric but what I have to remember is to think through the cutting instructions before hand and not just cut per the instructions. I did try this a few times and found I had trouble cutting off the points when piecing .....do you find there is less of a seam allowance this way? When I make them the "waste" way I don't cut off the points....any thoughts?
