Old Thread and Thread Spool Idea

I know there is a time when thread is no longer strong enough to use in quilting, sad, but it happens. So why not take those old spools of thread and make something for your sewing area/room. Found this idea while searching the internet and had to pass it on :)

That Is cute! And you can keep adding stuff to it!

barny 01-03-2012 06:15 AM

those old wooden spools are collectable

MoanaWahine 01-03-2012 09:17 AM

They may be collectable, but if done right, this can be done with out doing any damage and can be removable if want at a later time. Just use a fishing line to tie them onto a wire wreath form. Then just hang on the wall to display some beautiful items.

thanks for the idea

Really cute idea!

The only thing missing is a bow (using a measuring tape).

ghostrider 01-03-2012 10:28 AM

And to think it sold for 'only' $65.00. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/s...ic/biggrin.gif

I love the idea of the bow out of a measuring tape. Wonder how long it will take me looking for these to make one??? Would help if I would start to look. Here come thrift stores, antique stores and a good old fashion flea market to start with :D Might even have to check out the garage sales, never know what I will find.

Thanks for the great link and thanks also for the tip about using monofilament fishing line to put them all together! I have a one gallon jar of old wooden spools... Guess what I'll be making soon!!!

Maus 01-04-2012 01:48 AM

Cute idea - thanks for the link.

Cute idea!!!!

I like it! I was very frusatrated when I had to clean out old threads. I was sure someone local would want them for crafts, but got no takers.

zennia 01-04-2012 06:06 AM

Cute idea espically with the bow. I find a lot of wooden spools at house/garage sales for pennies.

damaquilts 01-04-2012 09:04 AM

I have plenty of old spools . I think this is a cute idea for the ones that aren't fitting into my jars.

sewnbug 01-04-2012 11:20 AM

I love it. I can see it dressed up with vintage buttons!

Ellageo 01-04-2012 05:51 PM

Another GREAT thread spool idea!

What a great idea!

mollysmom2004 01-05-2012 03:49 AM

I love this idea. I have collected wooden spools for years (some with thread, some without). Now I have something to do with all of them.

star619 01-05-2012 04:48 AM

This is a great site! Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

alfosa421 01-05-2012 05:40 AM

ool idea I have also seen where you can get a glass based lamp that you can fill with the spools and have your own personal thing going on-I keep mine in a jar just so that I can look at them and enjoy the colors-I have also seen where you can use them in with Angelina? fibers to make interesting fiber pieces to add to another fabric

I love this idea and then add the tape measure bow and then the vintage buttons. Such awesome ideas from all the creative people here. Can't wait to make one for my almost redecorated sewing room.

sewnbug 01-05-2012 08:43 AM

On the glass based lamp idea, I bought a lamp making kit and used an old blue mason filled with my husband's grandmother's vintage buttons. I now have a keepsake lamp for my sewing room.

I love this idea! I think I will use up the spools from my mom's collection and make these with my grandsons for next year. Thanks..

So funny, I was cleaning my sewing room today and I have a lot of wooden spools and old thread. This is a cute idea, however, I am not sure I want to do that with my wooden spools.... I need to find a way to not destroy the integrity of the spool and still use it.... thx.

baskets4moo 01-05-2012 08:20 PM

What a fantastic way to display some of those wooden spools I can't help but collect! Thanks!

Divokittysmom 01-05-2012 08:29 PM

Very cute idea!! Measuring tape bow is a fabulous idea!!

Janis 01-06-2012 12:17 AM

What a neat idea! And I like the idea of using fishing line to hold them together rather than hot glue. I'm a bit messy with that glue and sometimes my fingers get a little too close to the glue. :( And with the line, one can take them apart later if wanted and use them some other way. I also like the idea of measuring tape used as a bow or draped around the wreath. And adding buttons... How about a little old pair of scissors that are dull and not usable, a thimble too?

Scakes 01-06-2012 03:16 AM

Cute idea. My old spools are hidden in a drawer. I may have to try this. The measuring tape bow is a neat idea too. Would it be "too much" with a few old buttons added?

Thanks for the site I found a lovely paper star I'm going to try out!

That is really cute-unfortunately, I had a huge shoebox FULL of old wooden spools and gave them to my nephew's wife who loved collecting vintage sewing stuff, and shortly after, split from him and moved away. Now, I wish I had them back-thought they were just junk at the time!

dressmakergurl 01-17-2012 06:29 PM

I can see this as a clock. Using embroidered face, OR small scissors as the hands, a tape measure cut for the
clock face numbers, possibilities are endless.

delma_paulk 01-18-2012 12:52 PM

The other day I found a spool ring I made for DGdau 30 years ago.......empty wood spools on an elastic band, tied at the end. Will let her daughter have it next time they visit. She cut her teeth on these and my wooden fruit I had on the coffee table.

Fond memories.
