i know this was discussed a while back, but i don't know what the upshot was:

who owns an ott lamp
who loves it
who hates it
who has trouble getting bulbs
who has a wannabe

i'm thinking of getting one. are they any good? are there other brands just as good? do they last? do they get hot?

I have an Ott lamp. Use it only occasionally. Have never had to replace the bulb. Use your 40 or 50% of coupon to get it. That's what I did.

I love mine - bought it on sale 50% off, still using the bulb that came with it three or four years ago. No extra heat that I've noticed. It seems to help with the winter low-light blahs, too.

what was the price at joann's before the coupon and do they sell the bulbs? the online store sells them for $17 to $30 depending on item #.

which ones do you guys have?

Quilting Aggi 07-06-2009 04:55 PM

I have several and love them all!!!!

Moonpi 07-06-2009 06:25 PM

Mine is the small clip-on one, Bulbs are available anywhere here, but the lamps are (or were) made in Tampa, so maybe that is why. Try the search feature above - there was a long topic about them a while back, and some swore by the generics.

I have 2 of them. A stand up floor one and a clip on. Got them both from Joanns for 1/2 price PLUS free shipping!
Have had them since 2004 and haven't had to replace the bulbs yet and they made the move from HI to Guam in one piece!

Yikes...I'm not going to say what I paid for mine.... I have 2 floor Ott lamps...one by my recliner & one by my machine....wouldn't be without them! Also have the little fold up one that I take to retreats.... I have NEW glasses...and I'm a happy quilter....just give me the right lights! Ok.... so I'm in Canada....

I have several and I use them all the time. I used my coupons and got most of them from JoAnn's. First one I use is a flip up one right near my machine. My Machine has an ott light built in as well.

I use my stand light all the time for close hand work and reading. I for one love them. The bulbs seem to last forever!

I have 2 ott lamps -- a table and floor model. LOVE them both. Have had both for several years and have yet to change bulbs (knock on wood). I use my floor lamp by my cutting table. It really helps with colors too!

JoAnns is where both of mine came from...

I have a flip-up one by my machine. I love it! I got it at Office Depot & it's the same as the have 'on sale' at joann.com for $47.99...& I think I paid about $25. Of course, this was some years ago too. Use your coupons & I think you're good to go! :D

I have one in CT and one in AZ - best light I've ever had. JoAnn's often has 50% off sales. Check around on-line, too. I bought the first one from Nancy's notions on sale. The bulb burned out soon after I bought, and Nancy's replaced in without me having to mail it back! That's what I call good customer service!

I've had both of them for at least 8 or 9 years - no more replaced bulbs.
Both are the floor model that has a flexible goose neck top. I 'flex' it a lot in AZ to move the light from sewing to cutting table.

i've had nothing but good reviews. thanks everybody. i did get one at joann's and i'm happy with it. i got the desk one with the flexible neck. i know that my joann's will never replace the bulb, so i'm taking a chance there, because they are pricey. keep all your fingers and toes crossed for me.
