I've used this method several times. It's certainly easy and quick but be aware that all the edges are on the bias. Starch would help. Here's a picture of one of mine. I added sashing to stabilise the bias edges.

Another very simple set of simple instructions for the pineapple block is Elenor Burns.... Hers uses strips around a 4 patch, very easy. I made a full size quilt in a day.

When I was introduced to this it was QOV and it was called exploding Pineapples. The rule that I heard, is that you have to put the fabric to be cut on top. The fabric isn't the exact size as the bottom, so this is the way it works. I think it is a very smart adaptation.

Most pineapple patterns do have the points squared off.
