Quiltaholics

There was an interesting article in yesterday's TQS newsletter about quilters hoarding our stashes; they say we're "addicted to quilting, knitting and crochet" so now we're out in the open LOL!

orangeroom 06-28-2016 05:10 PM

Hi. My name is Orangeroom and I'm addicted to fabric.

Quiltaddict 06-28-2016 05:48 PM

Considering how expensive fabric has gotten I am definitely hanging on to all my fabric, much of which I got at lower prices.

SHELTIE'SMAMA 06-28-2016 11:31 PM

Good thing they don't seem to know about rulers, gadgets, patterns, threads and all the stabilizers and interfacings. Wonder what they would say then? My take on it is every hobbyist, for example paper crafters, has a selection of tools and supplies to make their hobby enjoyable.

Sure hope they never find a cure for it!

ManiacQuilter2 06-29-2016 03:59 AM

I hope they don't find a cure for it either. I am JJ and I AM a Quiltaholic!! :)

Oh yes, I am a fabric and quilt-a holic. When my husband and I moved to a retirement home a few years ago due to his health problems, I told my children that I was not going unless I had room for all my fabric. So we found a cottage with lots of closet space. Things were fine until family members were helping us pack up to move. They constantly referred to "downsizing." Then one day I looked out and saw 3 big black garbage bags beside our garbage bin. I first ignored them, but then decided to investigate their contents. Thank goodness I did look inside the bags. They were full of sewing supplies, which I promptly rescued! To this day no one has admitted to trying to throw these things away!

If you knew the culprits, would they be disinherited (from what they might have wanted)?

One of my sons has said to me "You are old - what are you going to do with all that - and more importantly, what are we kids going to do with all that when you are gone?"

Frankly, my dears, I don't give a ______.

Shelbie 06-29-2016 05:43 AM

I do not understand why some families think that sewing supplies belong in the garbage. Even if the quilter is no longer able to use them, family members need to realize that the contents of a sewing room are valuable, cost a lot of money and there are other quilters and community quilt groups who would put these things to very good use. Maybe as quilters, we don't do a good job of letting others know exactly how valuable our quilts, machines, fabric etc. is really worth. I know my son thinks the content of my quilting room isn't very important but he does know that it has a fairly high $ value and money is important to him so I doubt that my stuff will end up in the trash some day.

My name is Pat and I am addicted to quilting. :sew::sew::sew:

I just gave away my entire sewing room to a friend at church. Could I put a monetary value on it--several hundred dollars at least. More importantly, she can now quilt on a gifted machine and fabric and sew to her heart's content. Her friend and I have promised to teach her to quilt.

what a wonderful thing to do....sorry you had to do it, but I'm sure your reasons were very sound...now you can watch the progress of a new quilter and know you helped tremendously.

bearisgray 06-29-2016 06:32 AM

I started to get numb when I started to add up how much money I've invested in sewing supplies over the years (50+) and how much it would cost to replace "just" the things I use often.

Replacement value can be a lot higher than what we originally spent - inflation, and all that.

llong0233 06-29-2016 09:35 AM

Fun to have a laugh and make fun of ourselves. On a more serious note, remember the poor family who had all that fabric to unload after someone died? As I recall it was hundreds of pounds of fabric, literally a store full, in a "private collection". There is no way in the world that woman was going to be able to use all that fabric. She probably didn't have enough friends or family to give it to either. So I wonder what was the point? There were thousands of dollars wrapped up in fabric and notions that could easily end up in the dump. So do we find joy in the buying of fabric or the sewing? A little of both probably. Collecting fabric to use sounds like a good idea and I love looking, but hoarding is a mental health issue.

quiltingcandy 06-29-2016 09:45 AM

I am a quiltaholic and proud of it. My family understands my problem and uses it to their advantage - they ask me to make a quilt and I can't help myself, I do it. They don't tell me what to make, just whether it is a baby or young child. So thinking about it - they are enablers.....Hmmmm. Another thing I have started is making pillow cases to go with the quilts.

I have a daughter who comes over and "shops" in my sewing room. Off she goes and makes something cute. She is waiting for the day when her little ones are grown and she can sew again. My store goes to her when I am gone, and she will be happy.

Littledreamdevil 06-29-2016 05:27 PM

Hi my name is Delilah, I am a fabric and quilt-a holic. I love to sew and do quilts.
When I die, I think I will just haunt a fabric shop. Maybe JoAnn's.
I will be able to sew 4-ever then.

Glad I am not the only addict out here....LOL...Love it...

Is this where we come in out of the cold? We must confess? All the stashes of yarn+fabrics+tools+,+,+?
Hello, my name is Dot, and "I don't give a ____, either!"

I have heard that there are some people that buy ONLY enough fabric/yarn/whatever for a given project and give away the leftovers.

I am not one of them.

I hate that attitude that you're old and should just sit on the porch and rock so that someone else doesn't have to do anything when you're gone. Good for you, Bear!

Three Dog Night 08-26-2016 09:15 AM

My name is Chris and I am a Quiltaholic. At least when we are "high" on a fabric binge we aren't a danger to others.

Sheri.a 08-26-2016 05:32 PM

Sometimes hobbies are just hobbies. I love to buy fabric and think about what I will make with it. There is just not enough time!

The snobs that think they know better are just ignorant. I doubt they would treat a man with all his fishing "stuff" (boat, tackle, poles, lures) the same.

My kids know I spend a lot but know it's a pleasure to me. They seem to be fine with it. I hope they don't turn on me when it's time to downsize!
