Sewing for Mental Health

I need to show this to DH next time he rolls his eyes when I spend time in the sewing room! :D

It’s the only thing I can do that totally absorbs my thoughts

I tell DH, don't bother me unless the house is on fire.

Confirmation of what we knew all along, right?

Some place I saw a quote, probably on facebook, "The best antidepressant is a room full of fabric".

Thank you for posting this. It is SO TRUE!!!!! The only thing that kept me sane through times of high stress was being able to create with my hands.

...but all those cups, glasses and food on the scene, just make for trouble!

Yes, I think sewing and crafting are essential for good mental health-mine for sure. I have never felt 'worse' after a sewing session. I go to my sewing room when I feel down as well as when I feel strong. It is just the spice and solace of life. Others may not sew and craft, but, they need that special outlet that brings these same feelings that sewing and crafting bring to this group of people who subscribe to this board. Everyone needs to be their own best friend rather than their worst enemy. That is one component of some depression.

When I feel over stressed I try and sit down and sew and it just makes this malfuntioning world go away. I feel much better for the rest of the day when I can sew just for a few minutes or make just one block for a quilt.

I bought a shirt at M*QC in Hamilton, MO, which states “Quilting is Cheaper than Therapy.” It certainly is more fun!

Sometimes I don't even sew. Just being in my sewing room is calming.

I think it's a store full of fabric! On sale.....

Sewing/quilting has helped me through many, many difficult times in the my life. Right now, y quilting room is my salvation. Have my husband here at home in Hospice care. I am the caregiver 24/7....except for the aides. They are here one hour Monday thru Friday to help with his bathing. I still have all my marbles, at least, I am told that I do.

SEWBIZGIRL is right on........the best antidepressant is a room full of fabric.

Sewing is very helpful for distracting my mind from my fibromyalgia pain. Although if I sew too long, the fibro lets me know it's time for a break. I believe this works.

I do this! When I'm not feeling well or upset, I'll go sit in my sewing room and watch tv or read on the computer. I find that the machines and fabric are very soothing to me. My sewing room is definitely my happy place.

I think this is the best excuse I can think of to buy more fabric and spend more time sewing. It's for my mental health!

What a great article and so true! My first real interest in needlework was at a time in my life when I was really stressed. I'm high-strung to begin with and I've always gravitated to needlework. Without realizing at the time I believe it calmed me down. First it was cross-stitch, then sewing, then quilting. Quilting makes me happy all the time and I hope I never quit. Not likely!
