Susan Carlson Collage
 

I'd love to attend a Susan Carlson Collage class, but in the foreseeable future it is not in my budget.

Has anyone purchased Susan Carlson's Master class? Comments please.

Have not taken any collage class at all but the collage quilts are very popular now & very pretty. Maybe soon you will be able to swing the class fee & learn how to make those quilts. I'm waiting to see what you make. :)

I haven't purchased any of her classes but have watched many of the videos she offers on YouTube. So much information there. A lot of people like her technique and she has a nice way of presenting information. Maybe you have already seen her videos and that is why you are interested in the class. I would not hesitate to buy a class of hers if I wanted to use her technique. I am currently working on a collage using fusible web, Laura Heine's technique. It's just personal preference on that. I am learning that collage is not really my thing and probably won't do another one but I surely admire what others are creating. I joined a collage Facebook group and it is fun to see all of the different techniques that people use. Lots of information there and people are very helpful in answering questions.

I haven't, but I also looked recently (after seeing her show at the New England Quilt Museum) and thought they were pricey. Since I have lots of other quilts planned at the moment, I'm putting off any consideration of it for now. But I did subscribe to her newsletter.

I haven't attended any of the classes. If you are interested, there was an on line version of the master class that might work for you. Of course, it is more fun to attend classes like these in person. You get the benefits of her instruction and learning from others.

I started the sea-horse that was popular and it is now a UFO. My brain doesn't flow well with these type of projects so results look stiff and plotted.

Susan Carlson has some really great video's and seems to be a very engaging teacher. I especially love her video Colour Doesn't Matter or something like that.

I've used her technique (glue) and a technique more like Laura Heine's where you use Steam a Seam and you get very different end results, IMO, so you may want to weigh that before you jump in, depending on the look you are going for.
I found the glue technique to be a bit less refined (Although Susan Carlson sure does a lovely job!) than I get when I use the Steam a Seam technique.
There is a Facebook group called Collage Quilter that can answer any question you will ever have about collage and I'm sure there will be someone there who has taken the Masterclass.

Thanks for the facebook page. I am a bit hesitant to tackle a big project as I tend to be a bit OCD. The one block wonder almost drove me insane with all of the placement options.

I do love the collage pieces though. I have collected a number of Carlson youTube videos. She is very generous with her free videos and posts. Susan Carlson has a blog with student work. Her latest has short videos from students with their comments about working with collages. I got some good input from them.

I found Emily Taylor's website where she offers collage patterns for sale. Two interesting additions to the pattern is a grey background piece and greyscale print of the pattern to help with color selection.

Has anyone tried her patterns?

I just created a greyscale picture of a Taylor color collage I saw online and found it very interesting as far as color hue and depth as well as outline of pieces.

I tuned into Emily Taylor’s FB (or was it Instagram) live stream last week...she is continuing another lesson this week. She had a free pattern of an Owl that quilters were downloading to follow along or had the whole Aviary pattern for sale on her website. I didn’t print off the free version...just been watching her live stream where she gives great information.

I love her quail. I saw her video on FB. Thanks for sharing!!
