That's a good question. You will love machine embroidery.

If at all possible I'd recommend buying from a dealer that offers free classes. I know that's not always easy to do depending on where you live or how much you can spend. My next advice is that when you go to sites like emblibrary.com and all the others check out thier free tutorials and projects. emblibrary also has kennys corner which has tutes on stabliziers, threads, fabrics, etc. I read everything. Even from machine sites, I have a Viking so of course I read what they have but other machine sites have tips on hooping, fabric, etc as well. Also, if you go to yahoo, they have a group for just about any machine you can buy. Join that group then you'll have help from people who use that machine. The basics of embroidery is the same but each machine has its own personality. If you get the chance take classes. I'm going to weekend class in October that I just heard about in Richmond VA, it's only $99 for two days, they supply everything, including use of the machines and you get a CD of designs from a designer that I've seen one of her quilt designs sell for $89 but it self. It's a good deal. If you need any help feel free to pm me and I'm sure there are lots of others that would love to help you. I'm still learning but I really love embroidering.

Cute embroidery.com . Friendly people you can ask and answer. Free embroidery and you can become a member. One of my favorite sites.....

There are tons of them on yahoo groups...many are specific to a brand of machine, so you could probably learn a lot about each brand through them...but many are also non specific , just general machine embroidery groups.
Another site I like is on Garden web..

Which Viking do you have? I've got the Designer SE and have less than 3 hours on it. I like your idea about tutorials - never done that before. I've purchased some designes, however, afraid of machine so don't use it...

I have a friend who belongs to an embroidery board she is listed on here but I can't remember under what name if you PM me I could call her and ask her

I have a used Viking Designer I. Have used it quite a bit and purchased some designs from my dealer. I also suggest taking the free lessons. It really helped me. Now I'd like to get the equipment needed so I can get designs from the computer for my machine. I have it for my Brother SE350 but find that I don't know what the Viking's is called. Thought if I could buy it online it would be cheaper. Definitely can't afford to get it from the dealer at the present time. He's talking $400-500. My wallet isn't thick enough. Any ideas or answers anyone?

Thanks for asking about Embroidery, I didn't know this board was here. I have been using the quilting board for several months now. Just today I received notice that there is an update on Embird and thought I should get back into embroidery. I have been obsessed with learning quilting and have neglected the embroidery. I have a Brother 750D & a Innovis 2500D.

Have you tried EBAY to see if someone possibly has the software? You could probably use something like Embird as well...

I haven't bought an embroidery machine yet, but plan on buying a Brother. I know your feeling about being afraid, I'm kinda afraid that when I buy one I won't know what to do with it...too much money involved not to use it, so I have promised my DH that I will use it..

Sienna's GiGi 07-17-2012 07:38 AM

WoW! I just brought an embroidery machine and had the same question. I have no idea how to use it at all but I am going to get to know my machine a little at a time. I did not know the board had a chat but of course it would so I will dropping by to chat too. Very informative thread. Thanks for sharing.

I'm assuming since up to this point that I'm the only one that mentioned having a Viking that you are talking to me. I have a Ruby. I got it in Sept 2011 so I'm pretty new. I take classes where I bought it and our teacher is really great and will give extra classes when we want to learn more. I have read on here more times than not about those who bought the machine and let it sit so when I got mine I promised myself that I wouldn't do that. It was a big splurge on myself since my husband had just up and left so I wanted to use everything the machine has to offer. I acutally do more embroidery on it than piecing. I peice on my other machine more because I know it better. I think tutorials are great. I check them out on every site I go as well as the projects. Viking also has alot of videos on thier site too. Every month you can get a free design from them and then this month I found a neat new trick. Phaff which is owned by viking and uses the same format and actually has the free designs on the same place has a different one free so I was able to get that one free too. My teacher liked that. You've spent that much money on your machine it's a shame to let the best part of it go to waste but I understand. Even with classes it can be a lot. I don't spend too much on designs; mostly get the freebees and also the ones on sale. Is there a place close to you that has classes; it doesn't have to be a viking dealer. We have a few places here that have clubs for all machines; like tidewater sew n vac. I'll try and post what I'm working on now. I didn't do the ones in the picture; they are my teachers; mine are in blue. It's a bookmark, checkbood cover and eyeglass case w/inset rose design. All of it is done in the hoop. this isn't my favorite thing to do; that would be the cutwork needles which all Viking machines can do.Check out this site. It has a lot on our machines. I ordered a cd for my Viking #1 before I got the Ruby and it has so much info on it. The site is:sewmuch4retirement.com
sorry couldn't get the pic to post.

I'll have to check again; I know that I wrote it down. Send my a pm and I'll let you know. I'm so excited about it. Anita's designs can cost what they are charging for the class.

For the benefit of you Brother machine owners, before purchasing the PED basic software check out Embird. I started out with the PED went to Viking then to Embird. Sure could have saved myself some money if I had started with Embird. I am so impressed with being able to add on and upgrade their software at very reasonable prices.
