As Clay mentioned, Craftsy often has Aurufil on sale-50wt large spools for $6-7 each. The color selection is often limited, but they usually have the basics available, and shipping is very reasonable. I am now in love with the 40wt for Machine quilting, and still looking for a good source online...

When Tristan Threads was clearancing out Aurifil I bought all the doorbuster and grab bag sets I could afford. 24 big spools of Aurifil any wt you wanted for $65 or less. I have every color but seem to use up the neutrals first. I like the 12 wt for the big stitch look.
