I would RATHER press seams open, for one things less bulk I think on one of my person quilts I will try it that way next time. Thanks for the neat link

I think this makes a lot of sense.

This makes a lot of sense to me... My only question would be if you were to enter a quilt in a show/competition/etc would they mark you down for pressing seams open since it is not the "recommended" way of doing things?

with Judged shows, anything is possible.

Ohhhh, Thank you!! I have been pressing my seams open for years. Not because I was told to do it this way, of course. When folks at my guild would see me doing this, they would cringe and shake their heads. Didn't matter to me. My way of doing it worked for me. I have never had a problem with my seams not being strong enough to hold. Finally I have it in writing where it's not only okay, but made better by pressing open. Whaaa Whooo!!

I am a press open kinda gal. I love a FLAT quilt square. It how I measure my success ! Very very rarely do I press to the dark, and only under special circumstances. Yep.... I do get the "look" like some how I'm not a real quilter. It's always is an issue when a Block exchange comes up... and have been publicly scolded for pressing open. It gets quite heated with the press to the dark group and the press open group.
I have had some say its a weaker seam but , I have quilts "out there" for over thirty years and none have had issues. Same for using poly thread , I 've never had a seam "cut" by the thread and have used poly thread for decades.

I, too, always open my seams and never have to figure out how blocks are going to fit together on account of how the seams were pressed.

She makes a very good case. Now, to see if I'm too old to learn new tricks . . .
