That was incredible - such labor intensity most of us have never known.

Just amazing the time and work that goes into each piece. Priceless.

Thanks so much for sharing. I really enjoyed the video. It's no wonder batiks are so expensive. I'm sure they aren't paid much for all their labor.

Thanks for the link. I had no idea how it was made. Makes me appreciate them just that much more! Such a primitive set up and method but I think it would be difficult to make these fabrics using modern methods.

That was intense. Kinda makes me feel bad to pay 6 dollars a yard!

Noiseynana 07-19-2012 04:28 AM

For what is charged for for batiks .....I'll bet these poor people get pennies for all the hard work. Sad .

noveltyjunkie 07-19-2012 04:52 AM

Very interesting, but also depressing. I worry about them being exposed to that dye- can it be healthy to get in on their skin all the time like that, and climb into the vats?

I also noticed that the dyeing was all done by men- the first woman we saw was at the folding stage. I wonder why that is?

Anyhow, it is excellent to know how it is made. I knew the traditional methods used wax but I was assuming that the Moda stuff was some sort of photographic reproduction.

Wow! I didn't realize how labor intensive making batik fabrics is. Thanks for sharing.
