Sondray, I have really missed your postings. This resource for the scrappy log cabin quilt touched my heart. I like to use the 1.5 inch strips to get the variety of colors and textures. Yup, I am a Mary Ellen Hopkins fan to the core...

Can anyone tell me what "vilene" is? Woven or nonwoven, fiber content, etc? I can see where a base would stabilize the shape. I am open to suggestions.

The corner triangles of the final sashing doe add flair.

Thanks again, Sondray!

Piecefully yours,
Kay Susan

Vilene is a strong water-soluble stabilizer. Vilene keeps your stitches from sinking into high pile fabrics and is excellent for providing a stable surface for the embroidering of lace. You can hoop it either in front, or behind the fabric to provide support while embroidering. Or you can hoop the backing only, and embroider directly onto it to create your own lace. Then just wash it away in water. Vilene is a soft stabilizer that feels like Chux wash-cloth when dry. It is very strong and stable, requiring just one layer. Vilene is one of the original dissolvable backings and is European made by Freudenberg.

Ahhhhh!

Thank you, Sondray!

I am re-thinking this project. Perhaps, I could us Mary Ellen Hopkins techniques for chain sewing this 1.5 inch strips and use a little wider strip for the final row prior to squaring this off. Then, I could still sash the logs and add the triangle at the corners.

Light-weight cotton or cotton muslin might be another substitution if I think of this as a foundation pieced string-type quilt block.

I am trying to be resourceful and use what I already have on hand in my stash. Better days are coming, but meanwhile, I have to conserve my resources.

I prefer to use the term of being "resourceful" as my parents graduated from high school during the Great Depression in 1933. Currently, two family members are looking for employment in this economy....

Thanks for your help, Sondray.

Piecefully yours,
Kay Susan
