You are right beautiful and only $400 but maybe they really need the money.

Times are hard and the quilt won't pay the bills or buy groceries, maybe they have come upon hard times. So sad to see them have to sell it. It would be nice if someone in their family could stop up and buy it.

I don't understand people selling beautiful old quilts. Rather than sell it they could give it to a museum that would love to have it. Selling it for $400.00 is sad after the family has kept it so many years.

I vote for the museum too or I'd probably search the internet until I found another descendant who would cherish it.

It does not look like a quilt to me, but a handwoven bedspread.

The Appalachin (SP?) people still do these; you can buy them by the roadsides in the mountains of NC.

It's called a coverlet and it is woven. Generally, they are wool and I'm sure they were quite warm. Our guild did a coverlet documentation last year and we got many beautiful ones to document, but they are all so heavy and scratchy -not at all cozy and soft like an old quilt. I imagine if you don't have space to hang it, the options are limited. Our family has one, and I don't even like to put it over a chair and lean back on it, it's so scratchy. So it's in the cedar trunk until my children have to decide what to do with it

Looks more like what is known as a coverlet. Many times they are dated & might have a name and place {city &/or state} Just saw a beautiful one down near Lancaster, PA & it was dated 100 years before the year of my birth {will not tell!}but it was $900.00+ dollars. Oh well, maybe next time !!
