Default website and pattern costs

We often discuss the price of patterns/download pdf's and websites. This link shows many of the cost we could never dream about.

Wow - I guess I should buy patterns directly from the designer (if possible) and post/share those that I like more often! But then again, doesn't that take profits away from our LQS.

For such a large industry (a quick google search suggests the quilting industry is $3.7B annually) it does make one wonder who is making all the money then? Someone is because I know how much I'm spending

Oh - and I did buy Kirsty's Kaleidoscope pdf pattern!

That is an interesting read and I don't think I'll ever complain about buying a pattern again!

Wow, that is very interesting and I certainly have a different outlook about future pattern purchases...Kirsty did a wonderful job breaking it all down in her article. Thank you for sharing Nan.

a little niggle, everything she listed as expenses are deductible off the total income for tax purposes. you have to make money to do that though...vicious circle

I had my own business for many years, and had some hungry years, I sympathize very much with one-person-bands

I really like the Bonjour site and follow it closely. I, too, read her insightful article on these issues. I occasionally purchase patterns, but am more likely to purchase used quilt books from Thriftbooks or Discover Books and use the patterns in the books. If one wants to be in business, there are costs. She did not discuss payments from sewing supply or sewing machine companies who often kick in to "sponsor" popular sites.

The quilt business in all its aspects is no different than other businesses, small and large. It is up to the consumer whether to patronize locale businesses or not. The fact of the costs of running a business, such as basic overhead, is immaterial to most consumers. Not to put too fine a point on it, but a retailer's overhead is of no interest to me. I they want to offer a free pattern in hopes of generating other business, that's okay with me. That part of their marketing strategy is up to them. Speaking for myself, with all the wonderul, creative free quilt patterns available I wonder why anyone would pay for one.

Until one has ran (or tried to run) a business - I think many people have no idea of the costs involved.
