Janome 400E
I am thinking about purchasing a Janome 400E from a quilt shop. They said that it was barely used and only used it for a few of the projects displayed in their shop. They are asking $900 for it. Is this a good deal? Also I would appreciate any other comments on this model. Thank you

I am not familiar with this particular model. I had a 350E about 6 years ago and traded it in on the 15000. I do like Janome embroidery machines but the 350E had to small hoop for me and I wanted to do larger things, plus I fell in love with the 15000 and since it was a sewing/embroidery combo machine, I traded the 350 in to my dealer.
Have you done a google search for the Janome 400E? If you do that I am sure you will find pricing, the age of the machine, and reviews that will help with your purchase decision. Is this your first embroidery machine? If so you will need some training. Does the shop offer training classes for this machine?

No, this is not my first embroidery machine. I have a Singer Futura wgih I haven’t used a whole lot as it has to be connected to a computer. The Janome 400E that I am looking at will have three hoops coming with it. The previous owners must have ordered additional hoops. One of them is quite large. My thread that I already have purchased is mostly Sulky and Coats and Clark, what JoAnns sells. I hope that will work in a Janome as I don’t want to have to buy all new thread.

I've used Janomes all my life and never had one that fussed about thread. That said, if this is for embroidering motifs, I think that is a different thread weight so the whole thing doesn't get so thick. Which would be a pretty big investment because you need to many colors for embroidery, it all shows, unlike just buying base neutrals for piecework.
Perhaps someone will chime in on what their thread investment has been... sizeable I expect.

There are prices listed on different sites for reference. The machine site shows the largest hoop for the machine at about 8x8. The embroidery field is always a little smaller than the hoop.
Ask for a machine demo with the dealer to see the features. Ask for thread and stabilizer pack to get started. They can add this to the deal for you to make the sale. You will also need the bobbins that fit the machine. Ask to see the actual stitch count on the machine.
Is there still a warranty on the machine? Do they offer no-cost classes so you can learn how to use the machine features?
What type of projects do you want to do on the machine? Is the sulky thread rayon? You will probably want polyester thread for the machine.
Check the size and compatibility for the usb connection. I only load a few of the designs on mine when using machine embroidery. If there are too many designs it takes longer to load. Good luck on your decision.
