"Simple Stars, Beautiful Quilts" - Smart Piecing HELP!
#1
Okay so I purchased the pattern and kit for this quilt. The pattern can be found here:
http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/sto...3&Item_id=1028
Here's my issue. I use the Nifty Notions ruler and these instruction call for you to cut out 8 3/8 strips. Take those and draw a line down the middle, sew on either side of the line and then cut down the middle.
First off...I don't even have a strip ruler that is that wide. Second, no wear in the instructions does it tell me what my finished block should measure. If it did I could just use my half square ruler.
Anyway if anyone has done this pattern, or if you are great at smart piecing I would appreciate any input.
I have this in a kit and don't want to mess up my cutting. And I don't want to have alot of waste, so please let me know. :)

You can use your 12 1/2" square up ruler to measure the strips, then lay your other longer ruler butted up to the top of the square up ruler. Remove the square up ruler and make your cuts :D:D:D

This will be a gorgeous quilt. If you are making HST's you add 7/8 to the size to get the finished size HST you want.
Example: 5" finished (5&1/2 with seam allowance) add 7/8 = 5&7/8
Two 5&7/8 squares, right sides together, draw diagonal down middle and sew 1/4" on each side, cut on drawn line and you have two HST's 5" finished size.
Cutting 8&3/8, subtract 7/8, finished block is 7&1/2. If you are consistant with all of the squares being 7&1/2 finished (7&3/4 with seam allowance you will be OK).
You may e-mail her to let her know this is a beginner pattern and it would be easier if you knew the finished block size.
I have quilted for years and I still want to know the finished size.

I think they would be 7 1/2" as well.
How big is the finished quilt?
How wide are the borders?
The picture shows 12 blocks across.
Take the finished size and subtract the border twice (each side) and divide that by 12. Should give you the block size.

Okay well I went ahead and emailed Debbie Maddy and in like 10 minutes got a reply....who knew this would be so quick. Here is the response for anyone who might be interested as well:
Hello
The finished size of the block in Carpenter's Star Fit for a Queen is 7 1/2", Broken Star Queen is 6" and Broken Star King is 7".
P.S. - When I gave the dimensions for the finished block size I meant the size they would be when the quilt is finished. Add 1/2 inch to those numbers for the block size when getting ready to sew into the quilt.

Good that you got a response from her so quickly! when you said you didn't have a ruler that wide....are you talking about when you need to mark the strip???? If so, I would simply fold it in half and iron a crease in it.

This looks like the 4 hour quilt at the link below.

If you scroll all the way down, they have the instructions for adding another ring. I made the large one and plan to add additional stars, but haven't gotten that far yet. However, the finished size may be different from your pattern.
