$13 a yard????

$13 a yard????
Wow. Is that what everyone pays?
I had occasion to go to the closest LQS yesterday. I was pretty excited to actually shop in a real store and feel the fabric.
But I was quickly knocked down to size. Everything was priced about $13 a yard. That's a lot of money for a bed size quilt. I was interested in making myself a queen sized Dresden Plate quilt. Total of 30 yards front and back. That's $390.
How do you all justify spending that much? Especially for donation quilts.
Also, this particular store must be trending towards mod quilts. The majority of the store was batiks and brights. What about the reproduction crowd. or just some tasteful small prints?

I don't and can't pay that much for fabric. I have had good luck at salvation or good will stores. Even yard sales might have something. Old cotton shirts work wonderful. There are several online sites that I use.

I refuse to pay that much for fabric. So, I rely on my stash and online sale fabric. There are lots of sites with lesser priced fabric. My feeling is that the newest fabrics will soon be 'older fabric lines'. There are lots of fabric sources so you can save money. My 'shock' comes when I see the price of kitted quilts and them little notations underneath that you also need batting and backing.

Wow! $13 a yard seems quite high, even to someone living in a super expensive city. I think even the LQS here isn't that high. I've only paid that much for something that I love so much I can't live without it, or backings that are 108" wide. Check out online stores, a lot of them have daily deals and sales that bring the prices down. I've found http://www.fatquartershop.com/ to be pretty reasonable.

That's pretty normal for good quality quilting fabric. I've paid as much as $14.95/yard. Clothing made overseas is so inexpensive, it is almost cheaper to buy clothes and cut them up.

I am able to go to a fabric distributor warehouse and I see what a bolt of name brand quilt shop quality is priced for to the shop owner I don't mine seeing the same fabric at the local shop marked up twice the price, that's fair but to see it marked up almost triple the price I won't buy it even though I can. Batiks are always higher in price then regular cotton fabric and good batiks are worth a higher price.
