Last night I received a phone call from a lady who machine quilts. She was at an auction, bought a quilt and took it home. It's from the 1930's!!! A dresden plate pattern was used. She thinks, but cannot be sure, that they are ACTUAL feedsacks!! She wanted the quilt a bit larger so has added some borders with repro fabric. She was going to machine quilt it but decided that would not be 'right'... couldn't agree more. BUT she does not handquilt. She was given my number. I will be looking at the top in March - the question - how much to charge. I will be supplying the batting - that part is easy - however much I paid for it... the hard part - how much to charge for the hand quilting??? Does anyone have any suggestions.

I think it would depend on several things, such as how large the quilt is, how much quilting needs to be done on it, etc. I don't hand quilt so don't have a clue how long it takes to do one. Do you have an idea of how much time it takes to hand quilt various sizes with rather simple quilting? A lot of it will depend on how much you feel your time is worth in it. I think it'd be really neat though to work on quilting a top from the past like that.

I know I saw on a website somewhere that hand quilting was charged by each 36" length of thread used, but I can't remember for sure the amount. I think the website was something with amish quilts from the eastern states.
