Unhappy 5 Minute Block Question

I've ordered the book to make this block but have been playing with materials and trying to follow the YouTube video on making it. I've run into a problem and I wonder if the fact I'm using 3 6 inch square blocks and not rectangular blocks as are shown in the video.

When I sew the blocks exactly as she says, I end up with a block smaller then the other two, what I'm trying to explain is it is shorter on the sides and doesn't reach the outside border. Wish I could post a pic to explain but my camera is kaput.

Would square block make a difference in this pattern and do you need rectangles rather then squares? I assumed any shape would work.

seems like there is a tutorial or more here on the board for that block- measurements are probably posted-check out the tutorial section & see if you can find an answer there. i think you can use any size...consistantly...but the shape has to be correct (if 3" x 5" rectangles are used you could use 5" x 7" or some other size)

This may help you. The rectangle size does matter but the sizes are listed in this thread! Good luck - let us know if you are successful. Pics would be great to see.

There must be a formula that works because I want a smaller one and haven't figured out the size to cut yet.

It's a take on a flying geese block. So your length (finished) is twice the finished width. 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 should work; or 4.5 x 8.5; 3.5 x 6.5, etc.

The size does matter and they are weird sizes according to the book.
Small 2 7/8” x 5 ¼” Large 5 ¼” x 10”

Also, the book states that size of the blocks vary according to the pattern you are making.

Well, I would have messed them up for sure. Or not. Both of those blocks still follow the twice finished width=finished width rule, but the finished sizes are 2 3/8 x 4 3/4 and 4 3/4 x 9 1/2. Weird block sizes.

I shouldn't have said that is what the book says about the size of the blocks, that info was taken from the blog not the book. Sorry. I'm still waiting for the book. They are back ordered.
