I like the idea of a bag. Also you could make a pillow. Applique something that is interesting to her. Or just a big "50" and use her favorite colors.

If you and your sister have a warm relationship - maybe a long letter telling her how much you care for her and some memories that are meaningful?

If you and your sister are not close - maybe a check or cash telling her that it's a gift certificate to her favorite store or to apply it to something she has been wanting.

If she has way more money than you, than just find an appropriate card, show up at the party (if you want to) - if you don't plan to go, please send regrets - and let it go at that.

Haw about taking her to the salon for a fun day together, then out to lunch. I don’t need things, I prefer time spent with my loved ones.

Is she a quilter?
How about a fat quarter cupcake or two?

I am making my friend a quilt for her 50th. Maybe a beach quilt?

50 things with 50 reasons.
Small things …
Here's a link with some ideas, but you can personalize it especially for her

Good and interesting ideas here, thank you! I'm leaning towards a 13"x 13" lined tote bag using beachy or at least bright outdoor fabric and stitching an embroidered motif for the front. I got the idea from the book "Patchwork Loves Embroidery" by Gail Pan. I may even make a small cosmetic bag because you can always use one for something.

That said, I might find some cotton fabric and fall in love and do the quilty thing. Having purged bins of fabric a few years back when looking through my current stash what I have left is one bin of pretty much prints and naturally not a solid to match the blue and teal dragonfly print I wanted to use, so I'll have to take a ride to the fabric store this weekend. I also thought of putting in a small label, like a 'made by me', because, why not?

Even if she uses it for a quick trip to the grocery store or gives it away, it will be okay with me. I feel like this is what will make me happy to make.

Make her a big beach bag, big enough for flip flops, sunscreen, book, glasses, snacks and maybe a beach towel. We go to the beach a lot and I love my big bag. I wash it after every trip and I like having spare beach bags.
