My friends tell me there is a shortcut (less seams etc) in making a nine patch block--can you help me>

the only shortcut I know about is strip quilting (which still has the same amount of seams but done a little faster) or a fourpatch..but that's not really the same block at all, just fewer seams. I may learn something from other answers you get.
