I usually wind my bobbins with a lighter weight bobbin thread. When quilting should I be using the same weight and color thread top and bottom? I was using the lighter thread on bottom cause that what I was told to do when embroiderying, not sure is this is true as I read it somewhere and it could be just one persons opinion, but I remember when I took Home Ec in school we used the same thread top and bottom. Just not sure what to do.

You guys must get so sick of us newbies and our dumb questions.

It is just a matter of preference.

MY preference is to match because the bobbin usually shows somewhat on the top and I DO want the quilting to show on the back.
with embroidery you would have too much thread build up on the back if you didn't use a very fine thread

I match my bobbin thread to the fabric on the back of the quilt, and use another matching thread for the front. I find machine quilted quilts are not as nice when the threading shows on the backside (too many knots where you stop and start)...not like hand quilting where you want it to stand out

For bed quilts I use the same weight thread for top and bobbin when quilting. For piecing the only advantage to using a light weight thread in the bobbin is you can wind more on the bobbin.

I match when I sew patchwork seams, but not when I quilt. Sometimes I like a lighter thread quilted on top, so as not to show much, and sometimes I like a thicker thread on top to show more.

I only use lighter weight bobbin thread for embroidery stitch outs. When quilting I match the top and bobbin thread. Same for piecing.

Thank you all so much for your input. It looks like I am not doing anything wrong and if I want to match I can. Thanks again.
