Yes, I try to add a little extra something. Any of the things that you mentioned are wonderful!!
If you look at the posts, most of the ladies mention the little extras they receive along with their exchange.

For large group block exchanges, I like to add a little gift for the hostess. All that sorting and mailing is a big job!

i always give a hostess gift either a packet of machine needles, hand needles (if i know the quilt by hand), or a FQ.

i did another theme swap and i put in 6 inch strips of fabric for everyone in the group (about 2.5 yards of fabric) but only 2 other people in the group aside from me sent in fabrics to swap.

so even though it was a suggestion for the swap hardly anyone did it.

it depends on the exchange- sometimes a little extra is sent-- other times only the item...they are as varied as we are....many times for swaps- if there is a hostess who has to do alot of work (sorting the packages- resending- keeping track) a hostess gift is sent to the hostess (often they are not participants- they are only organizing- and left out- so the gift is really nice.)

I do try to always send a little something to the hostess. Sometimes my time or finances don't allow me to, but I'll always include a card and if finances are tight try to put in some squares cut from my scraps.

Im a swap hostess and I can tell you it varies from person to person.. Some members send only the items to be swapped and some send something - fq, extra sqs of the swap, measuring take zippered bag, quilt book, soap, chocolate bars, $5 gift cards, templates, blank thank you cards, needles, extra postage, keep the change for gas $, handmade gifts: pins, pin cushion, potholder, funky chicken, notebook cover..

It is not mandatory by no means to send anything. it is considered a nice gesture for all the work and our time that goes into 'hosting' the swap.. But I cannot lie, i love the goodies..

Glad I read this. I haven't done an exchange yet but I take things too literally sometimes and wouldn't have thought to do anything beyond what the directions said.
