I might try an invisible nylon on the top and purple in the bobbin to match the backing (on a sample first).SewArt International has a really good invisible nylon.

All the suggestions sound good, but I just love your table runner. The colors are wonderful and you did a good job!

Why not use a gold rayon thread that would really be pretty on both top and bottom.

Can you find a purple, green, gold varigated thread?

I would choose a varigated thread that has all of the colours of purple, blue, yellow etc in it. That way you can have purple on the back and if you have any tension problems it will not be very noticeable on the top because of the varied colours.

No expert here either, but this sounds like the best choice, although I really like the idea of the varigated is you were doing free motion. I'm a beginner too, and have only done SID, it's a little safer.
By the way, we're planning on visiting LA in May. Hope you have some good weather ordered.
