Question All cotton "crazy" quilt

So, I have the simply crazy tool (EZ brand) and I am stating a project with all cotton pieces, and there will be no embroidery/embellishments. My question is, do I have to use foundation muslin or paper, etc? Missouri Star Quilt Company has a similar template, and they don't use any kind of foundation. They just sew around, square, and cut. Is this because they don't plan to embellish, and all are cotton? Thanks a bunch everyone!

I do a lot of "sew and flip" blocks and always use a foundation fabric. I am sure you could do without it, but for me, it makes life a lot simpler. There is a lot of bias involved, so with a foundation, I am never dealing with stretch of wonky areas of the block.

I always wondered the reason for foundation piecing. Now I know! Thanks

I believe the "sew and flip" method helps give the block stability. To me it makes it much easier to manage. I have made several string quilts this way.

I have old crazy blocks made on foundation of paper, fabric and without foundation. I also have them made of fancy fabric as well as regular cotton. I believe they were made according to the fabric available and the need/purpose of the finished Quilt. The recent top winning quilt at the Modern Guild Quilt Show in Austin Tx was a modified crazy combining regular pieced blocks with crazy patch in regular cotton. This
technique is the basis of a book "15 minutes of Play" by Victoria Findley Wolf.
I took a workshop and like the method and am planning quilts without using foundation. It is my opinion that the template restricts the freedom of the crazy technique.

Holice, I agree with what you are saying about the template. Using a template for a crazy quilt would certainly add lots of extra time for the cutting. I can see where the results might be pretty with similar blocks, but the whole freeform concept would be compromised.

Is there a link to see pictures of the Modern Guild Quilt Show you mention?

My mom made numerous crazy quilts from cotton with no stabilizer with no embellishments and they were family favorites.I have made crazy quilt blocks that I do embellishments on that I use a muslin foundation.
