How do fabric prices compare between Marden's and, say, Joannes? Am I better off waiting for sales at Joanne's, or just shopping at Mardens? And how is the selection at Marden's? Thanks! : )

I shop at the Sanford Marden's, and the selection is fabulous. You can purchase lovely fabric for $5 and under, and they have lots of sales bins too. In my opinion, Marden's has the better deal. Fabric prices have gone up quite a bit at Joanne's, so even using a coupon, you still end up in the $5.00 range.

It has been some time (yrs.) since I shopped there since I have not gone to Maine in recent yrs.. the variety is tremendous, tremendous..........quality as I remember... it is very good. Prices very resonable.........especially compared to Joann's present prices..........

I would say that the fabric you will buy at Marden's, in most cases, is superior quality ( meaning quilt shop quality ) to the fabrics you can purchase at Joanne's. And, it's always priced at the low prices you don't have to wait for a sale or have a coupon.

I went shopping at the Sanford Mardens two years ago and just about bought out the fabric dept. They were selling for 2.99 and 3.99 a yard some of the same "identical quality" fabric that we sold at the quilt shop I worked at. My Husband was afraid we'd have to rent a U-haul truck to back home. I say run don't walk. I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised at the quality and the prices.

Great! Thanks, everyone! I guess I'll be making a trip to Marden's in the near future. :)

I've mostly shopped at the Scarborough store lately. I'm seeing some of the same type of Joann's quality fabric there more so I'd add that you need to feel it and be selective. Having said that, you can find some really nice fabric. I've found a lot of Maywood Studios and South Sea Imports. Prices have gone up there a bit too but it's still around 4.99 a yard.

The Sanford store is still the best near us I think. The fabric there is mostly $3.99 or $4.99 a yard now. Of course they still give you several inches more than a yard. Some of the older fabrics are cheaper than that too, and there is always plenty to choose from.

I'll have to get to Sanford again one of these days. When my Mom was alive, we'd go through Sanford quite often to go see her in Scarborough so would sometimes make the detour. Now, we've found a different route to go see the other relatives that's closer to their homes. And once a year, I usually get to go to the Ellsworth Marden's. That's a good one, too. My biggest problem now is that I have to start sewing up a lot of the stash I already own before I buy too much more!
