I needed a gray thread to match a two-tone gray fabric, so had to have a perfect match. The only thread I could find in the right color was Mettler Metrosene. I love this thread, I didn't have a single break on my longarm and it stitched out so pretty. My question-has anyone else used this on their longarm, where do you buy it, I got this spool at the Bernina shop, 1094 yds for $9.00. It can get really expensive at $9 a spool so would like to find it somewhere else for a better deal. Do you know of any other tread that acts like the Mettler Metrosene on your machine?

Thanks

I don't use this on a long-arm (don't have one) but I use the Mettler Embroidery Thread and I LOVE IT. Doesn't break in my embroidery machine. My Hancock's carries it here. I don't buy the large spools but Hancock's runs this brand on sale at 30% off fairly often. You might check Hancock's on line.

Do you know what weight it was? You could try less expensive alternatives by trying polys of similar weights from other suppliers. I love using isocord 40wt poly in my LA and I just broke into my first spool of Glide thread from Bobbincentral. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Gorgeous thread, no lint and quilts like a dream in my Innova. The glide is a 40wt that quilts like a much lighter weight thread and uses a size 14 needle. I will definitely be buying more of this thread.

Most of my sewing is clothing. I use Metrosene exclusively for that. It performs well with my vintage Bernina 830. I have had trouble with other brands being too linty or spooling incorrectly. I dutifully bought expensive 100" cotton thread for piecing and it drove me crazy with the curling. So I sheepishly went back to Metrosene for my last quilt.

I felt more comfortable using it with my first FMQ quilt because of familiarity. It took one variable out of the mix. I knew how it should perform.

I will say the I bought Connecting Threads brand of cotton thread, and it may win me over, I just haven't had time to use it much.

Here is website that has it. Isacord is the same thing.
http://www.threadetc.com/isacord.html

I use it all the time, and when I worked at a quilt shop, that is what we used on the longarm.

I'm not sure the weight of the Mettler Metrosene it says No. 100 on the spool. I have some of the Glide but have only used it for practice, it has a sheen so haven't had a quilt I thought it would work well on as of yet. With the Mettler I used a 16 needle. Did you have to retime your Innova to use the 14 needle? If I remember right from class in Houston, Carrie said if you go up or down two needle sizes that you would need to retime the machine. My machine is now making the most beautiful stitches after I had problems for what seemed forever. I took the tension back to factory setting and started over and that seemed to work. Do you use the magnaglide bobbins? I got some samples from Heidi and like the stitch, no tension problems.

So, am I understanding correctly, Isacord is the same thread as the Mettler Metrosene? Is it just the polyester embroidery thread? Is there a weight difference? Do you know where I could find a chart to cross reference thread colors?

Usually a Bernina store has a free color chart. As to a comparison, that I don't know. I just choose similar colors for my projects. The mettler/Isacord is 40 wt. Mettler also comes in a cotton thread.
