I have a long arm set up but rarely use it because I don't like the hassle of putting the quilt on the frame. Sad but true. I like the sit down quilting so much better. I do good work with straight line quilting but it's limited. I have been reading blogs about the ruler template quilting and decided to see for myself.

I have this set. It is much easier then free motion quilting on my own. My quilting looks as good as the LA quilting I see at guild's Show and Tell.

wow, nice set. i have rulers for the long arm, but have not tried them on my dsm. i need to get the correct/thicker foot.

I have been quilting for a very long time and I don't see how these work on a DSM. You have to move the quilt and hold onto the template at the same time.

I have the convertible set Janome with the quarter inch foot. Love, love, it!! I never could master machine quilting with the "hopping" foot and this does not hop. And as a bonus, I use my regular rulers and templates (like the drunkard's path) for curve hatching so I don't have the expanse of having to buy quarter inch thick templates. Cost me $75 on Amazon.

I have the Janome ruler foot on my baby lock machine and use long arm rulers with it. It takes a little getting used to so plan on some practice pieces but works well once you get used to it. On the domestic machine you want don't want really long rulers, so keep that in mind as well.
Look into Amy Johnson and Patsy Thompson. Both of them have great videos and info on this.

I'll be using my Brother 1500 with the large harp. I have a Janome and Bernina, the Brother is the quilting machine. Seems the ruler moves the fabric from the videos I've seen. This is why I bought it, to find out exactly how it all works. Should be something fun to learn.

I love doing ruler work. We have the same machine, the PQ1500s. I do just about all my quilting, both ruler work and more traditional FMQ on it. It is very easy to do ruler work at a sit down like the PQ1500s. There's a little bit of a learning curve--mainly remembering to keep the ruler up against the ruler foot. If you haven't taken a class, there is a good introduction to ruler work on Craftsy. It's taught by Amy Johnson. She also has a lot of free YouTube tutorials-- look up Amysquiltingadventures for her blog.

I recently switched from the Westalee foot (the one that comes with the set you ordered) to the Janome convertible FMQ with the add-on ruler foot since I tend to do a lot of ruler work and the Janome is a little more versatile for doing ruler work on quilts that have areas with lots of crossing seams. If you find that you enjoy doing ruler work, you may want to look into the Janome foot set that fits the PQ1500s at some point down the road.
