Christmas in July

I think usually they bloom around Oct. Nov and Dec. Some around Easter time. I know I put mine out in the spring. Whe the weather starts getting chilly for the fall, that's when they start budding. They bloom when I bring them inside. I think the cool weather puts them in the budding stage.

I have a white...what the greenhouse called...Easter cactus. It blooms every Christmas and then about 3 or 4 months later.
My Christmas cactus bloomed a few blooms for the first time last Christmas...since my hubby bought it for me at Christmas about 5 years ago. I had moved it to a different location in the house. A friend told me that when they moved back to PA from DE the HUGE one that she had...it took several years for it to bloom again.

I have a friend who has several in hanging baskets under a huge pecan tree. They bloom Christmas, Easter and July. These are 8-10 years old and huge. Mine is in a 12 inch pot, about 4 years old and blooms only Christmas and Easter. I love them in full bloom.

They're photosensitive. I cover mine with a large box from sunset to sunrise starting mid-October. I also attempt to keep the humidity higher by putting it on top of a rocks in a water-filled pan - it doesn't like wet feet.

There is a difference in the Christmas and Easter cactus. The blooms and the leaves are different. The Easter cactus has like scallop leaves and smooth. The Christmas cactus leaves has more like points on the sides of edges. And the blooms are different. But I don't know how to descibe those. I had the Easter one. But they are harder to take care of than the Christmas/Thanksgiving one.
