Default Applique question

Hello all!

I'm working on my next quilt. I just bought the accuquilt go and some dies (bought it second hand, for what I later discovered was dirt cheap!) Should have done more research LOL because now I want more dies, and wow, are they expensive! But Christmas is coming, and they are the only thing on my list!

So this is my next quilt. I've already ironed everything on. I'm going to be doing a lot of FMQ - in grid work. So the background will be very full.

Here's my question. Should I do the applique now? Or through all three layers? I've done both ways, but never on a quilt where I will be doing lots of FMQ.

And if you have any other tips / suggestions, fire away!

Thanks!

If you are going to match the thread colour to the appliqués, I would do them before sandwiching. If you are going to stitch them all with one colour that matches your backing, then you can do them after sandwiching if you like. I prefer doing my appliqué on just my top .

I don't have an answer for you on this question but from I've seen from you in the past, the quilt is going to be gorgeous however you do it!

Poop! LOL That's kind of what I was thinking too ...

So ... if I use the same colour thread as the fabric, would you FMQ the applique or do the blanket stitch?

Marion,

I made a project with a similar die and the umbrella one for applique. Another option is to use a small zig-zag around the applique matching the fabric color. You can also use the clear mono-poly thread.

Then add the batting and backing to quilt the project.

I'll post a couple of pics later for you and look up the machine stitch I used for it.

ETA: Check the Quilting stitches. You may like the one Q-06 (looks like a zig zag in Christmas tree outline). Adjust the length and width. I make a sample stitch out first before stitching applique pieces.

Marion,

There are machine EMB files available for some of the AQ dies. They are fun options too.

can't wait to see your quilting on that! I suggest you go on the Accuquilt website and sign up for their newsletter--they have die sales pretty often with different dies each time--worth the frequent emails!
