Hello all, I'm Sallie and new to this forum. I would like to know what is the best way to applique a picture onto a quilt block. I was told to use fraycheck, how well does this work.
Any feedback would help a lot. and Thanks

Hi, you didn't say if your picture has been printed onto fabric or if your background block is a pieced block or plain. I have made a few picture quilts and there are several ways to go. I would need to know more about your project before making any suggestions.

My blocks are white, the picture is from a printed material that I'm using for the applique. I am using a machine on this quilt.

Hi Sallie, and welcome!

I wouldn't use Fray Check for that, it's pretty stiff once it dries. I'd go with a fusible web and machine stitch around. Give it a try on a sample piece of fabric. Let us know if you need more info, there's lots of knowlege on this board.

If your phtos are printed on one of the pretreated fabrics that you run through the printer then remove the paper backing I would be curious why you couldn't just ues the photo fabric in the center of the block and add the white around it ( as sashing) and then trim the block to size. If you are sure you want to applique on top of the background, You could use a fusable web but I would definetly do a practice sample first. I am not sure how the printer ink will respond to the heat needed to use the fusable web.

when i tried to print a photo on a fusible web backing (it came prepackaged) when I tried to remove the fabric it just tore up. did I end up with old stuff? what I not supposed to actually remove the back? what is the scoop on that deal? does anyone know? I followed directions so far as I can tell.

....i was mystified.

I do not know of any fusable web that is designed to be printed on. The fabric I am talking about is pretreated and attached to a paper back to allow it to go through the printer ( one is made by June Tailor the other one is called Printed Treasures, I'm sure there are others also). There is no fusable on it at all, you would need to add that after printing and removing the paper back that it comes on. Maybe we are talking about two different products. What is the name of what you are using?

Hi Ruth - thanks for the question because your question actually solved the confusion on my part. Because it's the same one you mentioned (printed treasures) and part of the confusion was I guess I was expecting fusible web on it... so once I removed the sticky part (the paper) it seemed that it was seperating wrong. However,.... with your description this makes a lot more sense. It still frays on the edging however I guess I can make sure and leave a lot of side area blank.. Thank You.
