I really liked the idea of the cartoon characters in black. That could at least make it fun for a child. That is really a hard request!

Babies love black and white. I collect B&W fabrics specifically for baby quilts. You've had tons of suggestions, and some gorgeous quilts have been posted. Sounds like the mother really wants to display the quilt all the time, which beats it being "put away" somewhere and never used. To appeal to the baby, I suggest the B&W, no gray, and good lines of demarcation between the pieces. They love the bright colors also. I frequently do double-sided baby quilts, a panel on one side and the sampler blocks in B&W on the other. Just adding my 2 cents.

Go with a log cabin in mostly white, 1 gray, 1 black and white nursery print, and a different bright color in each of the centers. Should please Mom, by the way studies show that babies first recognize black and white as a pattern, and later the bright colors yellow being first.

I hear this so often - the recipient asks for certain colors and styles.....and I see the quilter struggle to try to find the "right" fabric and color combination. It seems to take all the pleasure out of making and giving someone a gift.....more like a "special order".

Do the log cabin quilt, putting the bright colors as the centers...it will be beautiful! Another option is a double sided quilt...do what you want on one side, and on the flip side, put large blocks made from black, gray and tiny bits of the bright colors...maybe 4 blocks, very large ones. That room will not always be pepto pink.

The most resent request is for a boy, who will be sharing a room with his 8 yr old step-sister who does not live in the home on a full time babsis, but they have painted the room "pepto-pink" for her. The problem is, I was requested to do a black & grey quilt "so as not to clash with the room" but I had found some construction worker fabric & some co-ordinating fabrics I think would have been great to make the baby a beautiful quilt in bright blue, red, green & yellow. Do I go with the mothers wishes, or go with mine, or I had also thought of doing a version of the log cabin but with a single colored square in the center with blacks on one side & greys/whites on the other. Each square would have a different color though-like one center would be red, the next would be blue, the next would be green, etc. Thoughts? Ideas? I really do want her gift to be used & cherished....

I think I would go with the Mother's wishes....you asked...she answered. Babies don't see colors anyway so the red square will be what he will be attracted to won't it. Like a lot of the answers you have received already, go with a reversible one then you both with be happy. You don't want her to put your hard work put in a closet do you?

Since you did ask the mother, I think you should follow her wishes.

I am curious how long you have known this couple? If she made the quilt and it wasn't received as you promise, what would you be willing to do? Make 2 quilts for a charity project? Just kidding. But promises should be made seriously.

This quilt I would (unfortunately) do the black and grey. But I might throw in one or two of the colorful construction blocks as you know babies love colors and different patterns, and there are research studies proving this. I would reconsider asking people about preferences as far as colors.....I do agree that asking if they prefer a blanket or bag is a great idea, but by taking out the color option this allows you, the creator, to express yourself and your colors to make the quilt as lovely as the infant that will be wrapped in it. I don't like seeing a small baby in black and grey it seems so sinister or bland. Babies deserve bright happy colors and designs.
Good luck. I know this would be so hard for me to do but I know you can muster the courage and create something wonderful and special for your newest family member.
